1ST NOVEMBER: ‘BAHN-STORMER SUNDAY

This is a special meeting for cars that can crack more than 155 mph straight from the showroom.

We have had the B3 accepted. Any other Alpina owners fancy joining us to fly the flag for the Alpina Register?

It seems from some old posts on the m5board that a 'de-restricted' standard 3.8 M5 can just break 170mph (171mph?) for a short amount of time as it has to do 7250rpm to do it and there is an ECU ignition cut-out on that protects the engine.

This assumes you have removed the mechanically operated restrictor from the throttle assembly.

The normal 3.8 M5 red-line is 6900rpm but the ECU permits brief excursions to 7240/7250 for 'short periods' and those that have BTDT say the limiter does kick-in to protect the engine.

I can only assume that a re-chipped M5 might not have this protection feature for the engine but the risk on revving a highly stressed S38B38 is on the owner.

The incredibly rare E34 '400bhp' M5 might well more easily break 170mph but the engines in those cars are very special indeed.

The E34 B10 4.6 and E34 3.8 M5 share the same 340bhp but the Alpina has 354lb/ft compared to the M5's 295lb/ft, and as you well know Simon from the B10 BiTurbo's 360bhp and 380lb/ft that extra torque can really press on a car on at the top end.

The E34 Alpina cars have different diff ratios to the E34 Motorsport cars too, using both power and torque across the rev range to achieve good acceleration and more relaxed high speed cruising rather than than the traditional high-revving Motorsport engines which concentrated more on acceleration sometimes at the expense of higher speed/lower revs cruising.

I only quoted the 'more than 170mph' from the B10 4.6 Alpina brochure as I hadn't realised the 'breaking the 155mph' connotation for the forthcoming Goodwood Breakfast Club.

Very true Simon. The early M5's had the wonderful hand built engine. 8)

But this is for cars that came de-restricted from factory.

Why dont you bring the E36. We can stand them together
