The car is still driving beautifully but a few years ago it was getting harder to change down gear from the Switch-Tronic steering wheel and with the car have no gear-lever gear change it would have been tricky to diagnosis. I took a chance on a second hand Alpina E46 steering wheel that proved to be identical and low and behold, easy changes again, albeit with a steering wheel abot 5 degrees, about a half a tooth on the spline out and I had just had the tracking done.

At some time I found some spare time and inclination and investigated the duff wheel; the buttons are meant to be sealed for life and not able to be repaired but with a careful incision here and there I found the root of the problem - a colder solder joint where the wire meets the back of the button. To be sure I soldered it and re-soldered the other button too and multi-meter testing proved it was all good; where I had found it necessary to cut through the leather to get to the bottons I glued on some thin black suede to re-cover the buttons.

I didn't get around to replacing it so it has lain, cleaned and perfect, in the attic for a couple of years auntil time and inclination got hold of me yesterday and I swapped the wheels back over as well as replacing some dash-clock lights that had failed.

All is well again, the wheel is dead-straight after years of being slightly out and the gearchanges light and precise from the buttons, except.....

I really like the feel of the suede on the steering wheel so much that I am now thinking of getting it covered in suede but whilst Jack at royal steering wheels seem to have the steering wheel re-covered he doesn't seem able to re-do the original thick Alpina stitching so who can? The factory? Would they take in my original wheel and re-cover it in suede and throw in some rhomboids for good measure?

I had this exact same dilemma with my st wheel - Jack can recover the wheel in some lovely leathers/alcantara - whatever takes your fancy, he can also stitch in the arrows and add rhombs, but he cannot replicate the Alpina straight stitch.

There is a trimmer in Europe somewhere that can replicate the stitch - I think he might be in Poland? IIRC he was retrimming wheels and selling them on ebay.de in Alpina spec.

In the end I bought a brand new wheel from Alpina. I suspect that if you want the factory to do something for you they will, but do it on a new wheel.
My wheel took over 7 months to arrive, although I think part of this was BMW UK incompetence. A new wheel gets ordered from BMW by Alpina, it's then stripped and buttons added and then it's trimmed to your spec at the factory.

One of these days I will update the thread on my car and add some pictures and details.

Do you mean the rear roller blind? I retro-fitted it as I had known of them but never seen one on a UK car - it is OEM item.

Edit: Ahh, I suspect you mean the little circle about two-thirds of the way across - that is the rear washer jet - it pops up when you need to squirt the rear screen.

After 22 years and 158k miles the car finally needed some welding.

On E34's the jacking points are exposed through holes in the sill covers and corrosion had been creeping a little - thankfully this was all from below and not, like the sunroof fitted cars, also from the sunroof drains that exit inside the sill at the jacking points causing all manner of horror shows when you take the sill covers off. Mine was very limited to almost exactly round the gaps in the covers. I haven't taken any photos but I was very pleased that extensive sill welding wasn't necessary.

I also had to replace both front lower control arms due to ball joint wear recently so took the chance while everything was apart to treat any surface rust on the front strut assemblies and the brake lines for the front calipers.

I gave the brake calipers a thorough clean and checked the B10 BiTurbo sourced four calipers were all still free and functional but I did buy two caliper re-build sets from Alpina earlier this year for when they need some work.

The front brake pads from Alpina were over £200 a set the last time I checked but in common with other BiTurbo owners I now use Mercedes W140 S600 pads which fit exactly inside the calipers and fit the discs perfectly, and can be found for £40 a set.

All in all the car is driving perfectly again - a testament to E34 build quality and some long term care and pampering by its two owners.
