Why M owners hate Alpinas!

Post by bmw_B8 » Fri Jan 31, 2025 7:07 am

I’ve noticed a trend that most M owners in the web forums hate the hear or see anyone posting or enjoying their Alpina on these forums.

Almost instantly they react to any claim or anyone posting something positive about their Alpina… as if it’s an insult to their M.

Is it too much for them for someone to pass on the M and consider the Alpina as the ultimate ride for a given series? M is a sport car… but Alpina is a super luxury yet high performance machine… They are different but why the hate? Wish BMW forums have a dedicated section for Alpina owners.

I am honestly not bothered what others think of Alpinas. I have owned both M and Alpina and both have their characteristics just like their owners -and thats not to paint everyone with the same brush in fact- its much more layered.

Yes it’s true. Some days I hate myself ! 🤔 But then I slip into the Alpina comfort seats and remind myself the Alpina is always a superior place to sit. :😂😂

I cant say I frequent M forums. But having been a member of the bmwccgb and encountered a lot of people with M Power as well as M Sport and M Performance cars I never heard any of them say anything detrimental about ALPINA.

I’ve been a part of the X7 subforums for so long since 2019, and also the 5 series since 2016. Yes, great experience. However, in the 8-series forum, it’s a different story. Majority of M8 owners for no good reason assume they are at the top of the BMW pyramid (which is absolutely incorrect), and won’t even let the handful of Alpina 8-series owners have an enjoyable discussion about theirs cars in a dedicated thread without chiming in with superiority comments.

Z4 forum has a dedicated Alpina section.

There are inevitable 'arguments' as to whether M is better than RS but most good natured.

Because the M car is marketed as the panicle of BMW range, but in reality "on the road" performance the equivalent Alpina is probably better.

Exactly, I’ve had the E92, brilliant V8 M3, then back in an Alpina or two of the same era, they are less shouty which is what I prefer.

BMW are responsible for diluting the M logo. I guess initially it meant M Power, but then they saw a marketing opportunity and started putting M in front of almost everything, some styling and some performance? I own an M235i, but dont consider it a M Power car, just a 3.0 litre BMW.

I have zero doubt BMW will equally dilute ALPINA and it will be some trim option, perhaps an electric BMW MA badge?
