E46 Recall - Airbag inflater unit TAKATA

Hi All.

Outstanding recall on my E46 B3. BMW tell me its the Airbag Inflater unit made by Takata.

Sounds fair enough, although last year I took my car to Swindon BMW and they kept me waiting for a couple of hours and then finally said we dont know if it needs doing or not.

I recently bought a part from Hungerford BMW and the recall has been flagged again.

Has anyone here had this done and can confirm that it is needed?

There have been two airbag recalls for the E46, I believe.

The first was for the steering wheel airbag and the second was for the front screen side curtain airbag(s).

I've had both of mine done on my 2003 E46 but I don't know which batches of faulty Takata units were fitted to which models and when.

Thanks Charles. The issue is that due to the pandemic, they want the car to be left with them all day. No loan cars and no buses to/from there either. My work life balance is a mess and I am currently working 10 hrs / day. Hence cant afford to leave it there for them to appear red faced three hours later to tell me that they cant conduct the recall.

I had the same issue with another E46 - waited several hours at North Oxford only to be told they didn't have the correct part.

Then I had to chase (and chase) until they got the right part and had to go back in.

Perseverance required I am afraid.

Just checked my B3S and fortunately nothing outstanding.

had both of mine done, after trying to double check they ordered the alpina badged steering wheel airbag they didnt and said sorry we can't do it today as we don't have the correct alpina air bag. numptys everywhere!

When my B10V8S had the recall I made sure they physically looked/checked they had the correct Alpina badged part before going in to have it fitted. Took less than an hour to fit while I waited/wandered about outside. Worth making a fuss before you go in.

When was the V8S recall as I can't remember one since 2012 when I got the car.

Looking back through my file and the recall notice for the front passenger airbag was November 2014.

Still trying to find the recall notice for the steering wheel airbag - but it was more recent.

The E39 airbag recall started around 2016 and is still ongoing. I think it only applies to the later cars. I had my V8S done around 2018 and my 530i Sport Touring done in 2019. Also took my Dads 530i SE for its new airbag last year. Worth checking with BMW, you might have to quote both VIN numbers.

Thanks greenelekta I will look into this. In 2016 I had my mind on other things so I probably did not pick up on this.

have had the recall done on my 330i, had both those sorted back in early 2019. Had it for the day. I'd say it was needed if its been flagged as being needed by BMW.

Buchloe Beast dropped off at Hungerford BMW this morning for this recall. They seem confident that they will be able to conduct this.

Ok, so no fuss this time and thanks to Paul Seaborn at Hungerford BMW for getting this done. The complementary health check un-earthed how desperately i need to replace the coil over suspension. The top mounts are failing in miserable style. I have the car booked in to BMR this weekend, so fingers crossed all works out.
