Interesting first few comments. You really need to understand what Alpinas are to appreciate them fully and not just think it’s a styling/marketing exercise.

The fact that even apparent petrolheads can possess the “just a Bimmer with fancy wheels” opinion makes the marque even more appealing to me. Those that get it, get it.

The problem with buying the cheap D3’s is, without diligent previous ownership, the risk is that you can’t be certain the car has retained its ALPINA-ness. It’s all to easy to add cheaper/standard suspension components and there appear to be quite a few people who struggle with dpf, glow plug relay, egr issues that are hard to trace going off some posts here.

Good to see Ade is still about and commenting, he was always a staunch supporter of the brand.

It was possible to equip the D3 with pretty much anything from the 3 Series options list, as well as some Alpina goodies, but many early buyers were evidently keener on the driving experience than creature comforts, with some even failing to upgrade the upholstery to leather, or the manual air con to climate control
This comment is a little misleading. The main reason the specs of the D3 (and D3BT to a lesser extent) don’t vary much is because cars were built without customer orders and with a ‘standard’ set of BMW options (half leather, auto a/c and rear PDC on 2007-on cars) to keep the price point just below the 320d MSport.

There was theoretically the option of spec’ing anything but the additional surcharge of £1.5k (or thereabouts) was intended to dissuade most folk from making a factory order for options. Hence why there are very few nicely spec’d D3’s. I can only think of a handful of E90’s and one E91 with a decent options list. There were also quite a few with dealer-fit leather/heated seats and/or cruise control though.

the UK cars came in a fixed spec when new which was miserly bar the 19 inch wheels. It was deliberate as it was 500 quid cheaper than 320d M sport

i believe you could alter the fixed spec but it cost £1500-2000 plus the cost of the option wanted

I agree with the previous comments about it being light and nimble great car .Unfortunately my car was written off last year.
Now hunting for a F31 D3.
