D3: MonoTurbo or BiTurbo
Hello
I understand there are differences between these two (in price as well! ), but I am currently interested in a 2007 (probably 57 plate, as it's on D3 plate). This is the MT model. About to see it in few hours later on today!
Is it much inferior to the BT?!?
Areas of interest: real life performance, handling, reliability, running costs
Many thanks

Re: D3: MonoTurbo or BiTurbo
Is it much inferior to the BT?!? - Depends who you ask! BT has a much more linear (usable) power delivery through the rev range where as you have to be in the right gear in the MT. Not much difference on paper in performance and probably more rewarding to drive the MT for the reason above. Lots of turbo lag on the MT but keep it above 1500rpm and not an issue.
Handling - Almost exactly the same, although the MT has slightly lower profile tyre on the rear so maybe slightly better but not really much in it.
Reliability - About the same
Running costs - MT probably slightly cheaper for consumables as it uses standard 320d brakes and uses the older M47 engine but has more 'Alpina' tweaked components from the 330d parts bin. Depends if anything goes wrong I guess. A new turbo would be expensive
Insurance - I think the MT is generally cheaper to get cover
The BT seems to eat rear tyres a lot quicker than the MT. Not cheap at £200+ each a time...
Bit of a discussion HERE & HERE

I stopped doing the Drive and Dines a couple of years ago when the local speed limits were reduced to such an extent we were in licence losing territory just continuing the events on our regular routes. Took all the fun out of the drive so now we just do a Dine most months.I_MNL wrote:Many thanks indeed

I see; pity about the drive...
Yes, indeed see the thread what NeRo posted here

My D3 won't be ready for tomorrow, as I asked it to be as perfect as possible for a 5-year old , so I have to wait for next week.

MNL, I see from the post above that there is quite a 'ladies' interest in the club. You must let them know that Liz drives our Roadster S as her daily, and there is also Spanna (Anna) on here in a D3 and there is another female Roadster S owner whose name eludes me atm Liz takes a lot of interest on here but due to her very long working hours from daftly early to stupidly late, she doesn't get the opportunity to frequent other forums.

A busy one running an interesting department For example, 8am until around 10pm today then tomorrow will be a 7:30am start, full day in the office then drive to Cardiff for all-day meetings on Thursday.... so around a 9pm finish. Then she'll be late home on Thursday. It's become 'normal' but goes with the position, unfortunately. And then she tells her team not to over-do it....great example, she is!I_MNL wrote:Dear me... So, you will see she doesn't get a lot of time to 'chill' in front of car forums. She does enjoy a peruse of the goings-on here, though.
