Hi, I am looking at buying a 530d touring E39 but saw a D10 Touring for sale in Germany yr2000 for roughly same money around 14k euro ,obviously the 530d is fresher 2004 for the same cash .I liked the idea of the power and exclusivity but am worried it might be too thirsty and really render the diesel option stupid .How do the 2 cars drive against each other and economy in the real world assuming I?m not thrashing them.
thanks for any advice as I cant find anything in detail of anyones experiences of the D10 on the net.
Tony

I am not sure about the D10 myself and I there probably won't be much experience on here about them (no doubt I will be corrected ) but a conversation at Alpina last year led me to the conclusion that it was a fine ground-breaking car in its' time but now well eclipsed by newer non-Alpina BMW diesels, however, it is an Alpina and brings so much more than a 'normal' BMW.
Good luck with you decision.

What spec are you looking at?
I take it they are both E39's, in which case the D10 every time (depends on mileage though, the D10 sounds cheap, so might have lots of miles).
Look out for ususl BMW bits to go wrong - plus the injectors (worth putting the car on a diagnostic machine) although if mega miles, they will have been changed.
The D10 is a quick machine, and not yet "eclipsed" by newer BMW's (the 35d is in effect the modern D10 engine). Of the two the D10 is the most economical and fun to drive, I had a 530d touring for a while and hated it, the D10 is "nearly a petrol" (mind the redline though).
In the diesel I prefer the manual to swithtronic, if you are going with latter, extra prob is torque converter (510Nm to go through the box - even the 535d only just beats it).
If you need any more info, give us a PM, I'll gladly help out.
