Whats your fuel economy like ?

Post by neil » Sat Nov 04, 2006 11:43 am

Ok this is a topic thats come up a number fo times and I think it would be helpful for people to be able to compare their economy with others

Format

Name | Car | Year | Average | Best | Worse | period monitored

I'll start things off with my old B10:

Neil - B10 3.3 saloon - 1999 - 27.3mpg / 31.5mpg / 23.8mpg - (04/2000 - 08/2003)

if you can copy the previous entry and add yours to the end as with other threads:

Name | Car | Year | Average | Best | Worse | period monitored
Neil - B10 3.3 saloon - 1999 - 27.3mpg / 31.5mpg / 23.8mpg - (04/2000 - 08/2003)

I'd also be interested to know if anyone else's car tells fibs- the mpg average between fills per the OBC on my B3S is consistently about 3-4% optimistic compared to a brim-brim manual calculation.

Not a big prob in itself, but a bit worrying when you are running on fumes as the range reading is bollox. Therefore worth checking...

It would also be interesting for people to note what brand of fuel they use typically- we might be able to get an idea of whether the uber-fuels are worth the extra outlay, which is best, or whether we can stick to Asda 95...

It is my experience that all OBC are optimistic

For my readings I was using either shell / BP super unleaded. - this was a few years back so don't think the optimax / ultimate tags applied.

Charles is a optimax / V max user.

Robert,

Twice now I have gone to zero and beyond on the computer range. The worst was when I did about 20 miles on a screen displaying dashes.

When I filled up I put in just over 61 litres in a 63 litre tank.

My guess is that the zero point means that you are on a reserve gallon.

I could be wrong, but both times when I refilled, I put in less than 63 litres.

Secondly, I would strongly recommend against using supermarket fuels - the quality of the additives and detergents are inferior to those put in by BP, Shell and the other branded oil company fuels. As Neil has indicated, I have been using Optimax (and now V Power) as religiously as I can for the last 2.5 years and before that stuck to quality brands (primarily BP & Shell) before that.

Didn't know the E39 had a crummy 70l tank as well - such a bummer that you can't specify long-range tanks in Alpinas anymore...

I agree Hythe, I did not want to get off the Motorway at that point as I was having a great dice  with a E60 M5, spoilt my fun  .
I have found that the higher average speed I maintain the more ecconomical the B10 becomes :D
Remarkable proof of Burkhard's genius in engine management.
I certainly could do with a bigger tank, it would then be a real continent cruncher :P

I have to admit I did enjoy bring the B8 back from down south and parking it in the garage and looking at the petrol guage and it still being full !

I didn't enjoy using 1/4 tank driving in and out of Nottingham a couple of days later though !

The extra tank is certainly going to come in useful - although I'm not sure I'm ready for the £100+ cost to fill it all.

50+ mpg at 70 mph Over 600 miles to a 63L tank,
In other words fill up in Portsmout and drive to Glasgow with more than 1/4 tank of fuel remaining :D

This is one reason the D3 will be a perfect weekday car i'll save close to 400quid a month that i can put towards depreciation on another motor :D
