Am I the only one who finds it odd that there is no mention of pistons/rings with a rebored block? Would it be acceptable to reuse the old ones?
No respectable person would reuse the piston rings from another block.
Alarm bells are ringing after reading this thread. I'd get a cc check done, a crude one will tell you that if the stroke is wrong, then the bore is probably wrong too!

Also, if you peer into the bores with a torch ( assuming you can on the V8 ) then you should see something stamped on the pistons. i.e. in my M3 i can see 'S50' and an arrow so it will confirm that is/is not a 540 engine.

My guess, but you would only know by speaking to Phil or who he sub-contracts to, would be that it's had new rings and pistons. If the engine needed a new block rather than just having the gasket itself replaced (which from what I understand tends to be the case if you actually catch it soon enough if it lets go) then wouldn't that suggest the engine was run longer than perhaps it should of been?

Maybe I'm wrong, I'm no mechanical expert, but rather than running around with alarm bells ringing, just pick up the phone, that's the only way to know. It could be the case any parts for the block itself are held in a separate invoice, given it was subcontracted.

Our dear mod Charles could have an idea as I understand Phil did a lot of work for him on his B3S, although I can't remember if that was engine/gearbox or both.

they halved the renewal price I got from Flux :D
Thanks a lot for the contact! And thank you for the further feedback. I've just got of the phone to Phil who mentioned that the brief was to fix head gasket and there shouldn’t be a problem with piston rings. He offered them into bores and gaps and they were ok. I guess the seller could have changed them, but cost could have been an issue. After spending £3+ on the engine, refurbing the alloys and then having to sell it for only a little bit more, I don't blame him. However, I am still in two minds now again about going ahead with this now based on the last round of feedback

Would have thought as long as the pistons weren't damaged you'd reuse them but good practice to fit new rings? I guess Phil can only do what the customer will pay for at the end of the day.

surely if you're boring a block out by that much you'd need new pistons - just rings aren't going to cut the mustard.

I thought that the replacement block was being bored out to accept the pistons from the original engine
