Alpina D3 Touring, no. 225

Post by ali » Sat May 28, 2022 7:01 pm

Not my car but I met the lad that owns it a few weeks ago
I saw the car and it is very clean

Alpina D3 Touring, no. 225 up for sale. 123k miles on the clock. Very rare car with what I’m led to believe in being less than 100 examples of this car being in the uk. Comprehensive service history. Clean bodywork for its age and interior also with it being half leather/Alpina carbon cloth. Recently it has had new rear tyres fitted, along with the oil change. 5 months MOT on the car as passed October 21 with no advisories at all. Car wants for nothing, and is a delight to drive with no issues at all, considering it is the earlier M47 2.0 Diesel engine that do not have the timing chain issues. Private plate does not come with the vehicle.
£7500

Looks quite nice. Could be tempted as there doesn’t seem to be a Biturbo that ticks my boxes at the moment.
Scotland based? Just a bit of a trek for me really.

The link just shows the photo. Is there another link for the sale? Or details for the owner. As I’ve never had Facebook, I seem to miss out on a few cars for sale!

Pros/cons of the MT v BT D3?

If you are genuinely interested then I can put you in touch with the owner He isn't on the register and kind of keeps himself to himself. I know the car was his dads car and he bought it if him a couple of years ago. Think he said he has had it 7 years possibly longer

Pros are the wider wheels 9.5j have a nicer dish on the rear of the MT. The BT lci cars had a wider track and only 9" wide rears.
Turbo lag is a bit of an arse on the MT though I'd recommend driving one before the trek all the way up here if you can get a shot of one.
I prefer the LED light clusters and bonnet scuplting on the LCI cars too, othert than a few BHP and torques there isn't a great deal of difference.

When you mention clean bodywork, did you notice anything wrong/bad with it? Dents, scrapes, rust etc. What part of Scotland is it? Just need a bit more info before deciding if it’s worth travelling up there to view it. I don’t want to waste my or the owners time if it’s not spot on. I’d sooner wait for the right one, if one ever turns up.

Pros/cons of the MT v BT D3?
Biturbo Pros
Larger Brakes (from 330) all round are better at stopping them by a large margin. D3 brakes (from 320) are marginal at best
No major swirl flap issues. D3 is likely to have them
Better detailing in design
About 500 material changes over pre-LCI cars as the build on the earlier cars was very average
No turbo lag. D3 is horrible to pull away in until you're used to it, but then anything else you drive gets the ass revved off it when you pull away
Wheels are stronger. D3 wheels whilst lovely on the eye, are soft as putty and also ironically prone to cracking
Easy to change air filter: D3 airfilter is a swine to remove and replace
All have rear PDC. Early D3 do not
Auto option is good. No D3 auto
Lux version has nav etc

Biturbo Cons
On manual cars, the original clutch can be very juddery. D3 clutches are prone to failure due to oil leakage past the main engine seals, plus breakdown of other seals letting grease onto the clutch plates
N47 engines can have timing chain failure. If any car has incomplete, or extended service intervals, just avoid. The D3 M47 does sound far rougher than an N47
Early Biturbos don't have auto aircon. All D3 do have it

On both models, there is no indication of engine cylinder preheater failures. These are essential to get the engine to run hot for DPF regen. On the D3, there are two coolant thermostats (detail evades me atm) which must both be fully functional to give the DPF regen a chance. It's worth getting fault codes read either pre purchase, or immediately afterwards, and on the D3 you could do with seeing some evidence of thermostat related work.

For me, a decent Biturbo trumps any D3 any day

It is in Dunfermline a small town (now city thanks to the Jubilkee) 12 miles north of Edinburgh just across the forth rd bridge
I didn't go over it with a fine tooth comb but didn't notice anything untoward about it at all and the lad Marcus seemed very genuine

The car is mine, was for sale since I hardly used it these days. However been driving it again for a month after issues with the winter/daily caused me back into this and tbh I’ve removed the ad since I enjoy driving the car too much. The sensible head has told me not to move on a car like this just yet haha
