e46 B3s Coupe - Advise on value required

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to sell my e46 B3s Coupe #90 and need to know if anyone is interested in buying or can advise on a fair price to put it up for.

As you can see it's a 2004 B3s Coupe with 100k miles on the clock.

Since covid started myself and my B4 have been working away from home, so due to matters beyond my control, the B3s has been a little neglected...+ I've been meaning to sell since I bought the B4....as it wasn't getting driven as much!

The car needs a little work to bring it up to a1 condition and I am in two minds to spend the money or sell as is?

The issues are mainly cosmetic - new tyres, refurb wheels, some paint work, rumble from gearbox when idling in gear.

I've looked at current e46 B3's up for sale and prices vary wildly, so it's hard to know, with the current increased second-hand prices, what to set the value at....whether it be in it's current state or a1 condition.

So, I thought I'd come to the experts....what do you think?

It seems like a more realistic value for a B3s, compared to the convertibles currently up for sale, with prices of £15-28k!

Would an A1 condition coupe have a more realistic value lower than that of the saloon....given that there were more coupés sold in the UK?

coupes generally a bit higher like for like

calling out big ticket items where work done will help command a premium eg head gasket, suspension and gearbox work etc

Hi Colin - there have been 23 B3S' that I've seen for sale since Jan-21 across the various body styles. Across those cars, based on the last advertised mileage/price, the average was 82.7k/£15.8k.

For Coupes specifically there were 5 advertised since May-21 (all pre-LCI strangely) and the averages were 101k/£11.2k, limiting that to just Private sales the average is 98k/£10.8k for 4 cars. As far as I can tell only one of those actually sold (based on last V5 issue dates) and that was 139k/£8k.

There have been a couple of B3 3.3 Coupes run on Collecting Cars recently and they are consistently in £7.5-£8.5k range. With a bit of uplift for the newer B3S I'd pitch into the £8-10k range depending on how much work is required. Otherwise, list it as an auction and put a reserve on that you'd be happy with and see what happens.

It's difficult to say which body styles are most desirable, it's a lot of individual preference. I would say that saloons are usually bottom of the list, with Tourings and Coupes towards the top and Cabrios in the middle. The other big differentiator is the colour specs, individual colours and leather really help to stand out, and being Titanium Silver with Black Montana that's quite a stealthy combination.

That's just what I wanted and more. Gives me a clearer picture on what the value the car at.

It's not easy to value when there's so few up for sale, all of which aren't facelift/B3s coupes.

i think 8-10k for a b3s coupe is too low unless you are desperate

You might be right but based on the comparable B3S' that have been for advertised (and haven't actually sold), a car needing work, in a standard colour combo which you actually want to sell is going to struggle above £10k in my opinion.

Just so you know, the car hasn't had the head gasket done, nor the he torque converter but, apart from the rumble from the gearbox when the in gear and idling, there are no mechanical issues.

I have had an offer of £6.5k....

only you know what its worth to you so sell it for whatever you are comfortable to let it go for but that number is well above 6.5k for your car
they are not making them anymore and the e46/e39 era was the high water mark so i think they deserve to command a premium

I appreciate that many on here will think my offer of £6.5k was “paltry”, but to put it into context it was based on:
1. The HG has yet to be done.
2. There is an unidentified gearbox rumble.
3. Rear wing needs attention.
4. Tyres will need replacing soon.
5. Alloys have some curbing
6. Windscreen was a non MOT failure crack, that has been there for a while, but it’s still a crack.
7. Replacement wing mirror it has a different cable to original and doesn’t currently work.
8. Non OEM shocks (although they are Bilstein)
9. Unclear how complete the service history is.
10. There is no MOT and the offer was based on me collecting it by trailer, which obviously then leaves me with the risk of anything else that needs doing for the MOT.

These are special cars and I believe that they deserve to be maintained to a high standard and whilst I know this is a near 20 year old car, there is also several £000 to be spent here (that is known) to bring it back to it’s best. I genuinely wish the seller all the best with the sale (and have done in our correspondence)but for me, £6.5k was based on me then spending £5k (and a lot of time) to bring it back to it’s best. At which point I will have a car with a market value of around the total amount invested in, not a £15k+ car, as some on here seem to think.

I really should have bid on the #124 E46 B3S (the green one) and I actually reached out to the seller a couple of times when he posted it on here and I was willing to offer him more than it ended up selling for, but he never responded to my messages. It looked fantastic in green and I was at the NEC and viewed it in the flesh. But congrats to Josh who did win it, he has a fantastic looking car there and for me it will be the one that got away.

As I said, I have wished the seller best of luck with the sale and I appreciate that there are people out there that want something for nothing, but for me, my offer was based on the above considerations, knowns and unknowns.

I think your valuation is not at all far away given what will need to be spent, money which you may or may not see back. On the other hand the one that got away for you is back up for sale....

this is your first post so no-one here knows you so i dont know why you felt the need to defend your bid. its your call and you bid what you felt its worth to you. all fair game unless im missing something.

given the one you wanted originally is now back up for sale presumably you will be buying that one then?
