5th Round - Red Bull Ring, Austria

Post by neil » Thu Aug 11, 2011 12:05 pm

Chasing points in the alps

ALPINA and the LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler start with the BMW ALPINA B6 GT3 into the second half of the ADAC GT Masters season. For the first time, the popular German GT series will race at the Red Bull Ring, formerly known as the Österreichring, situated close to the beautiful Austrian Alps. At the fifth meeting of the 2011 season, the currently second placed BMW ALPINA drivers Alexandros Margaritis and Dino Lunardi are eager to regain the championship lead. Alex Plenagl and Florian Spengler are equally excited before the Austrian race, as they will start with a new BMW ALPINA B6 GT3 into the second half of the season.

Tension is building up in the driver’s championship of the ADAC GT Masters. After four rounds, Margaritis / Lunardi are second, only eight points behind the championship leading Lamborghini of Ferdinand and Johannes Stuck, sons of legendary racing driver Hans-Joachim Stuck. For most of the drivers and teams, the Red Bull Ring, which was closed between 2004 and 2010, is an unknown territory. The LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler have been testing at the 4.318 meter long track ahead of the race weekend. Alexandros Margaritis has raced on the track before during his career in Formula cars. “The track itself is still the same, but the infrastructure changed significantly and they have put in place some very nice facilities. The track is extremely fun to drive on and due to the altitude difference, the track is very different to other race tracks.“

After a very difficult race at the Nürburgring, Margaritis is hoping to score some good points together with teammate Lunardi. “The Red Bull Ring should suit us much better than the Nürburgring. The track offers some medium-quick and some very fast corners, where we can take advantage of the BMW ALPINA B6 GT3’s good aerodynamics. While we are quick in the fast corners we also have to keep in mind that we are forced to run a smaller air restrictor since two rounds ago, and we don’t know yet how that will effect our performance on the straights at the Red Bull Ring.”

“The latest race at the Nürburgring showed that the ‘Balance of Performance’ im- posed by the organisers works well and makes for a very homogenous grid“, says Andreas Bovensiepen, ALPINA managing director and head of motorsport. „We had to start with a penalty weight at the last race. That clearly affected our performance. Now, we are rid of the additional ballast and had the chance to gain some experience on the Red Bull Ring in recent testing. It’s important that we achieve a good position in practise, then we will be able to score a good result at the Red Bull Ring.“

Although the ADAC GT Masters was on a five-week summer break, there was no time for ALPINA and the LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler to rest. After an incident at the Nürburgring, a complete new chassis and shell had to be used to build up a new BMW ALPINA B6 GT3 for Alex Plenagl and Florian Spengler. The two youngsters are eager to bolster their rankings and are also chasing points in the team championship for the LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler which is currently in third place halfway through the season.

Both races from the Red Bull Ring will be broadcasted live by “Kabel Eins” in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on Saturday and Sunday at 11:45 hours.
