Post by vblanche » Sun Feb 27, 2011 11:26 pm

What would be the "best" classic sport car? by "best", I mean, everyday use, reliable, under £30000...

asking that just out of curiosity.

Lotus Esprit HC Turbo - and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise

Mine's never had an issue, apart from the clutch plates sticking from lack of use!

Depends on your definition of classic though I guess, what era you thinking about?

Well thats certainly an "interesting" answer....!!! Not the first thing that sprung to mind!! (and I'm a Lotus enthusiast!!!)

The problem with this is, since we are talking classic cars it will very much depend on the individual car, and what maintenance it has had....

A couple that spring to mind that ought to be good bets would be Volvo Amazon and Saab 96....

It also depends of your definition of "sports car". Are we talking about something that looks exotic, such as the Esprit; something you need string-backed gloves and a 'tache to drive, such as any car you might see on the cover of Classic and Sports Cars; or something over 15 years old that can hit 60 in under 6 seconds and still exceed 155mph?

i would like a rwd sierra cosworth with a stage 3 tune around 330bhp
at that level they can be abused & reliable + really fun without costing a fortune

a lot lower than your price range but still good cars

Of
Trouble
Usually
Serious

then?

"Classic" and "everyday" are pretty much oxymoronic. If it's old it will be less reliable. 30 year old cars, unless they've been fully rebuilt, and even then, are going to be pretty poor on the reliability, road noise, watertightness, comfort, speed and ride quality.

Plus if you spend 30k on an old car, it'll be worth considerably less if you drive it daily.

I think we do tend to look back at what we could not afford as young lads,i cut my teeth on old fords/cortina / escorts,i pined for a type 28 lotus cortina,& after many years finally had the chance to drive one..totall diapiontment..bag of shite, mind you that was after many years of bmw ownership, but,if i could get my hands on a descent one,i would have the escort version.

I had a couple of RS2000s as a boy (when I was 18 and 19) and look back with fond memories. I had a mint 1600 Sport when I was 30.... it was rubbish!
I did like my Sierra Cosworth I had though but I am sure I would be disappointed if I drove one now..... 204bhp 152mph.... any old diesel can do that now! :D

How about an Alpina Z1?

I didn't even know these existed until I was introduced to one face to face in an ALPINA connoisseurs garage! Rather tasty and some cool features too!

I love the whole package!

Good to see an Alpina make it onto this thread

Here's another...

Image

Whether you consider it a classic is subjective but it's over 15 years old, a similar vintage to the 993 mentioned earlier; it's useable every day; it's reliable, in a different league to the lotus; it's certainly fast (indeed faster than the 993)... and you can get two of them for the budget in question. I'd take a coupe and a touring in matching colour schemes, assuming a convertible wasn't available
