Alpina B8 Gran Coupe: 600bhp V8 saloon to be revealed next week

Post by Jonnywishbone » Thu Mar 18, 2021 6:00 pm

Not much detail in the report though there’s numerous pics with varying degrees of camo.

Either the work experience kid wrote the copy or the author is smoking some strong stuff if they think the car will cost £85k. The donor car costs £100k and I’d imagine this will at least match the £125k-odd cost of the base M8 Comp.

I would still love one of these.

Agreed, no way an Alpina will be cheaper. I also thought they had said there were no plans to do an Alpina 8 series coupe or convertible but just the GranCoupe whereas this article suggests it is 'likely'.

I wish they would do a 'B8' convertible, that would make a great future replacement for my current daily F14 6 series convertible although my intention has been to keep my daily car a slower one than my special car and I intend to never sell my E61 B5.

My money is indeed on the work experience kid smoking something whilst typing :)

Indeed. The second paragraph contains a link to the new B3, only it takes one to the F30 B3 road test!

Unfortunately this is a reflection of the change in the way news cycles function in our modern times.

Before the advent of internet and social media, the television news programmes had time between broadcasts to check their stories, as broadcasts were typically 8am, 1pm, 6pm and 10pm. For newspapers, they had a day for the dailies and a week for the weeklies. In the case of car magazines, weekly magazines normally had up to a week to keep it under wraps and prepare their story. As for the monthlies, there was the inevitable creep associated with trying to beat the competition, such that the May edition started to be published in April!!!

Nowadays, with so many competitors in an extremely fast-moving and noisy online environment, it is a race to be the first to break the story a nanosecond after the scoop has been discovered, for fear of a rival announcing it before you - with the associated benefits of online traffic going to their site and online advertising click-throughs and views starting to accrue.

As a result, accuracy and fact-checking tends to go out the window, sadly - which then has the knock-on effect of compromising the benefits of being the first "to the press" by leaving a poor impression in the mind of the consumer.

There is an interesting comparison also to be made between highly dynamic and fast-moving social media based discussions (such as the multitude of Facebook groups aligned to Alpina, for example) and the more static forums (such as here) where there is more time to consider posts and responses, as well as being able to reflect and review earlier conversations relatively easily and without the pressure of the immediacy that comes from social media.

Apologies for the length of this post and the vague link to the actual story - but this is something that has been troubling me for a while and I wanted to get it off my chest! As for the OP, I am sure all will be revealed properly and accurately in due course

Charles, you are not alone. I too share your concerns.

The standards of English are forever in decline. In my experience many professionals (e.g. engineers, lawyers, doctors and teachers (not you)) are just as bad as Autocar journalists, but what is more galling is these professionals charge for their shoddy documents, letters and correspondences.
Present & Past: Alpina D3BT (F31); Alpina D3 S (G21); Subaru Forester XT (SG 2.0); Porsche 718 Cayman; Golf R (Mk7); 911 (997.2); 911 (996); Subaru WRX STI (Hatch); Alpina D3BT (E90); BMW 330i (E91); Elise (S1); Skoda Fabia VRS (Mk1); Peugeot 106 GTi; Skoda Octovia VRS (Mk2 estate); Subaru Impreza WRX (Wagon); Subaru Impreza Turbo (Wagon); Lancia Delta Integrale Evo; Golf VR6; Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9; BMW M3 (E30); Peugeot 106 GTi; Renault Clio 16v; Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9; Escort Mk3; Escort Mk1

Here is the Autocar review of the new Alpina B8 and it looks a lovely car, especially in that blue.

As a professional Engineer I have to take exception to this. I would agree that the capabilities to communicate in written English are in decline and I despair on the quality of understanding in the young entering our industry. You could say it’s the quality of teaching, the lack of effective testing or merely the impacts of social media or txt spk.

Unfortunately the pace of modern life means that all my clients want an immediate response to their emails, or ask for ridiculous turn round times for technical documentation. No wonder the quality is going down.

In the early days I could spend a day crafting a response to a local council member or a general complaint to ensure the content and tone are correct. The pace of email means that this no longer happens.

It’s also surprising that you don’t think your paying journalism, well someone is paying them and they are getting the costs either directly or indirectly from the public.

I too am a professional engineer (one trying desparately hard to improve the standards for my customers).

My profuse apologies Adam for any offence.

No offence taken, we are all entitled to our views. I will gladly forgive writing standards (to an extent) if I can improve the process and knowledge within the industry, for me the really big issues are:
Unintelligent clients refusing to take advice from professionals who are hired to advise
The process becoming more important than the technical competence
project management becoming administrators; and
The computer or the guidance is always right, in effect trusting everything that is presented to you and NOT using good engineering judgement.

Working in transportation means that good engineering judgement has been superseded by political judgement and misplaced “safety” concerns. As an engineer I believe I’m here to solve problems, not to write pretty prose, where as it’s all that journalists do, so my expectations must be so much higher.

Sorry to rant, but things are just out of control in civil engineering. Easy solution would be to retire, but Lean and business improvement opportunities are too interesting if I had the time to truly commit.
