Thanks for the share. One for our esteemed Alpina buffs - is it true the dampers and springs would be the same as the equivalent B3 with considerbly more power?

Doubt it, think the D3S weighs considerably more. Noticed his when I saw weights for the 340i vs 340d.

According to the parts catalogues:
- Front Struts: same for both
- Front Springs: B3 has two ALPINA Spring options whereas the D3S has the same two Spring options plus a third.
- Front Anti-Roll Bar: the B3 has an ALPINA Anti-Roll Bar whereas the D3S has a standard BMW part
- Rear: same part numbers for everything, rear struts, anti-roll bars & 4 ALPINA spring options on both cars.

What is the difference between each of the multiple different springs?

Reads like I was correct to opt for the standard 19inch wheels.

It’s to allow ALPINA to adjust a vehicle’s spring specifications depending on the total number of options/final weight of vehicle.

It dawned on me that might be the case. Thanks for confirming.

G21 B3 is 1940kg vs 2010kg for the D3s Touring. Those are assuming 90% full tank of fuel and 75kg for driver and luggage. I guess the difference between the two is a combination of engine and mild-hybrid system in the latter.

The thing that piques my curiosity is what changes are Alpina making that add a whopping 170kg onto the B3 over the M340i and 130kg onto the D3s over the M340d.

I’m comparing published BMW and Alpina quoted figures so I suppose one explanation could be that the BMW figures for their cars are a load of cobblers.

That’s quite a weight for a 3 series!

Also the difference between D & B would surely mean different springs.

Also noted the D3s has only 15bhp more and yet the mpg drops from 44.8 to 37.2 mpg? Seems a relatively big drop for the gains?

That's pretty crazy isn't it.....

I'd also been surprised by the hefty 198 CO2's for the D3S up from 139 on the out-going F3x D3. Presumably a result of the move from NEDC to WLTP.

Are the relatively small gains due to the increase in weight and new emmisions standards, that said I am sure ones I drive them my F will feel out of date even though its lighter !!

Yes but that doesn’t explain the difference between the M340d and B3s mpg?

I suspect its the old chestnut on dry v wet that is an issue with motorbikes , I’ve not looked at the BMW Ds stats , no idea how they measure weight but it’s clear that ALpina may be straight forward and real world.
