M760LI famous owner but an Alpina owner

Post by Fast3000 » Sat Oct 01, 2022 4:24 pm

I was minding my own business down a quiet country lane yesterday morning.... pulled up on a grass verge (yes that was risky for the B3S but was fine). I had parked In front of lovely looking m760LI (last of the v12 bmws?). The owner jumped out and could see him walking towards me/my car...it was the one and only Jay Kay. What a true gent. Lovely looking Alpina he says! Really nice convo about cars Alpinas Of course (he has a b5). He was admiring mine and a real petrol head let alone purist. He said never sell it tuck her away!! Top bloke.

He's apparently a real car nut.

He does indeed have a B5, it's an Alpina Blue B5 Touring (G31) and it was a demo at Sytner in Harold Wood for a while. I got to go out in it as a passenger and it was bonkers quick. He bought it a little after (possibly early 2020?)

As a slight aside, I am now the very proud owner of an M760Li - it's fantastic.

James

Pretty sure Wellsy has mentioned that he's had a chat with JK about his ALPINA too.

Pretty sure JK has upgraded that ALPINA Blue B5 which was pre-LCI to an LCI ALPINA Green version now and congrats on the M760Li. Are you going to share any pics somewhere?

How are you getting on with the 760? Anything to look out for that you’ve noticed after living with it? My dad is eyeing up getting one. Coming across one with a relatively decent colour combo is proving to be quite difficult.

Hey morning all,

Yes JK is local to Princes Risborough and a real car nut. I've spoken to him a few times and every time all he wants to talk about is cars. When I was getting my decals done I saw his B5 parked in town and parked behind him, not knowing it was JK's, to compare the decals and confirm my suspicions that mine were not 100% correct. He came over and was saying how good Alpina's are.
I then later saw him pull into my road in his White SWB Audi UR Quattro, a real beast, he stopped then as well, as I was cleaning my car, he said he'd bring some of his cars round for me to clean, as a joke, I said yeah bring em round. . . .

I have said to him he should come to an Alpina meet, maybe if Sytner Nottingham happens again, I'll invite him to that. Clearly he's a busy guy still touring and doing concerts around the world but hopefully I can get him along to something next year.

Here you go...

Carbon Black with Black Nappa leather - very unimaginative I know but with my hobbies/clothing (always in jeans) the lighter trims wouldn't work.

So, 3 months in, I absolutely love it!! I hope I don't sound like a pompous arse but it isn't my everyday car. It's better on fuel than one would think. It will do 31-32 on a decent M-way run but plummets in town/traffic but fuel consumption wasn't a consideration really.

It's fabulously comfortable and refined as one would expect but strangely dull on a 70 mph run on a M-way but for no other reason that it is so well fettled and insulated that 70 feels pedestrian. It wasn't until I go this that I have begun to understand why large performance cars always tend to come screaming past you. The other thing is how quickly it does things with a 0-60 of 3.6s, it is a fabulous overtaking weapon. I specifically wanted a pre-facelift car as the LCI brought in Euro 6 compliance (laughable on a 6.6 I know!!) which dropped the power down a little. I Have done just under 3k miles in it so far and it doesn't feel like a big car to drive but does when it comes to parking but it does fit in my garage with a little room to spare but I have a large double that I had built to accommodate bigger cars with a little room to spare.

So far, there is no significant -ve but one backwards step for the 7 and the G3x 5 (we have a 530i Touring) is the way the intermittent wipe is done. In the 553d GT we have and other BMWs of a similar vintage, the intermittent wipe is a button on the end of the stalk meaning you can also flick wipe without stopping the intermittent. On the 7 and the 5 Touring intermittent is the first upward position in the stalk meaning that you have to turn it off to flick wipe and then trun it back on again and yet, on a 22 plate X2 I used, it still has the intermittent wipe on the end of the stalk. Just a niggle but seems a minor backwards step (1st world problems eh??)

The sound track is amazing and I don't know whether this is pure engine noise or enhanced with some injected sound through the sound system but it's fabulous in Comfort mode and superb in Sports (louder and more growly). Performance is still mental in ECO-PRO mode too.

It does about 400-450 miles on an 80 litre tank at best and the frequency that it needs a drink understandable but who cares in this instance?

The seats are very comfortable although, as they are comfort seats, if you gun it in the twisties, the chassis (X-drive) deals with it fine but you can slide around a bit. One massive highlight is the B&W sound system that is supremely crisp and clear and any volume level that I have pushed it to.

There is a truck load of room in the back even with where I have the driver's seat (I'm 6ft2) but I can't comment on the comfort side of things but I haven't had any complaints from my 17 & 14 year old daughters.

Dad here! Thanks for the detail right up. Especially the MPG. Thought 30mpg might be possible, not that you would buy this to save fuel but god to know. Considering this as a 3 day a week 150 mile round trip to and from work. Would replace the D4 but would still have the E46 B3.

Obviously for 40 miles a week you'd be in to just over a tank. It's an 80 litre tank so up to £130 for a fill up but I reckon you would be hard pushed to find a more luxurious barge to do it in.
