Stone chip on alloy
I’ve got a stone chip on one of the alloys on my B3. I’m not as bothered as I thought I might be, possibly because it’s not a result of carelessness on my part. As a result I’m not desperately keen to have it repaired unless the procedure is minimally invasive.
As per the pic below, the chip has gone through the lacquer and the paint exposing bare metal below. It’s a forged alloy, if that makes any odds. Is this likely to eventually result in the dreaded white worm? Assuming there is now a risk of corrosion over time, how would this best be repaired? I’m not even that bothered about it looking perfect; I want to make sure the metal underneath is protected and if it can be made to look like it never happened, that’s a Brucie. Can this just be touched up with some lacquer? Any recommendations for a pro repair?

That's a bit of a bugger! I'd probably speak to one of the specialists like Lepsons to get an opinion.

That aligns with my thoughts at this stage Bob.
I don't suppose you know what the paint code for the silver CS20 wheelset is do you? Silver "Lacquer 03" according to Alloy Wheels Direct though I'm not sure how much that would mean to them.

Sorry Sal, I don't I'm afraid. Never seen an actual code but the default answer usually comes back as "Sparkle Silver" but who knows!Jonnywishbone wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 2:53 pmI don't suppose you know what the paint code for the silver CS20 wheelset is do you? Sal, it’s hardly noticeable, so I would just try and stop the moisture getting under the lacquer. I have don’t the following successfully on diamond cut alloys; take the edges off gently used some wet&dry, clean thoroughly with pre paint then heat with a hairdryer to get rid of all moisture, then fill area with lacquer from a touch up pen.

Re: Stone chip on alloy
Thanks Adam, funnily enough I was just searching on detailing world for some tips on a DIY job based on similar advice to yours from elsewhere.
Lepsons would only do a full refurb but going down that route for what as you rightly say is a very small blemish is the route to madness.

Good advice from Adam - and there will be more to come no doubt if you're using it frequently.
Just seal the wound to prevent moisture getting underneath.

Re: Stone chip on alloy
I agree good advice and it’s what I’ve done, minus the sanding part, mostly because I’m not as handy as some of the folk on here and didn’t want to make it worse. I can live with the cosmetic flaw; as you say Marc there will be more to come. Specifically this particular wheel design is going to be a magnet for damage even if you’re diligent parking. The classic Classic design is a dish whereas the spokes of these nudge (and may even breach) the plane formed by the wheel rims.

I find you can get a much neater job if you use a superfine 00000 artist brush instead of the brush that comes with the touch-up.
