and thanks to drewjack for pointing out that the boot mat's reversible as I hadn't realised and that will help to keep the carpet side in better condition now I know - 18 months in and I'm still finding out really simple stuff

Well guys, #170 has been gone a few weeks now and hopefully the new owner is getting on well with it.

Meanwhile I've just picked up my new car today - here it is.

Image

I have really enjoyed my Alpina experience and it's been great to be part of this community, albeit for a short period of time. I'll definitely have another Alpina again in the future, perhaps when I need a touring as I love how they look in that shape.

In the meantime though thanks for all the comments and words of encouragement along the way. I hope some of my DIY in this thread helps the E46 owners in the future and shows that, with a decent set of spanners and some time, a suspension overhaul is very achievable.

Cheers

James

Enjoy the new car, I have to say I'd buy a second hand car off you given the time and effort you put into sorting out the B3

Nice new motor.

Any thoughts as to changing from the run flats to non-run flats?

Thanks Barry - I enjoy looking after my cars, but I think Alpina owners are definitely some of the more conscientious owners anyway so I was in good company!

Thanks Mike, I'll let you know once it's run in but after 160 miles so far it's quick, refined and quite discreet but doesn't have the nice NA 6 cylinder noise of my B3. Other than that, it's perfect

Paul, it comes with Michelin Pilot Sports as standard, so thankfully no runflats. As a result the ride is really good. Not Alpina good you understand, but close. You can order one with RFTs as a no cost option but not many people do.

Thanks Mark - yes all to my own spec. This was the colour combo of my Z4MC and I liked it so much I thought I'd replicate it.

Great resurrection hap! I love your knowledge of past threads on this forum.

Looks like it hasn't changed hands since James sold it and the mileage hasn't increased much. Still looks pretty tidy. It's a really nice car.

Wow, amazing work Hap, well done for spotting it and remembering my thread from way back in 2013!

Looking at the photos now I am having pangs of regret because it looks really good and it would make a great addition to the garage alongside the E36. But I'd have to do a manual swap as I could never get on with the gearbox and it's bound to be a lot more than the £5,250 I sold it for too.

The chap I sold it to sold it on quite quickly (2 months I think) and I always thought he might have been a trader in disguise. The person that then bought it I think posted about it on here and did some work on it including a change of gearbox fluid which I recall he said fixed the slow changes I'd experienced. I think he then sold it too, so it did change hands quite frequently back then. I sold it with 76k miles and so it's done 15k miles in the last 8 years which is quite a low annual use so was presumably a weekend car.

It's still wearing the same "Dick Lovett" numberplates I fitted and my "service history" Excel spreadsheet seems to have survived to make it in to a photo too. I'd love to drive it again though now I have the E36 to see how they compare and contrast.
