Absolutely incredible!!

Post by v8 ego » Thu Mar 01, 2012 10:16 pm

I am on the cusp of getting a company car and yesterday I got a demo 520d Efficient Dynamics from BMW for 5 days. I have taken it out for a good run to Maidenhead which is 99% motorway driving but in rush hour so there was a fair deal of stop start and traffic jam driving.

I can only say that I am totally impressed all round with the car. The seats are incredibly comfortable, the i-Drive and electronics are a leap forward from my old 750i and the fuel consumption is a world on. Over a 200 mile trip I averaged 61.4 mpg (indicated on the display and calculated from the fill up) which pushed the full tank range to a little over 900 miles. I realise this is somewhat exceptional and I have been driving in 'honeymoon' period but I would expect a running average of mid fifties which for a nearly 2 tonne car that will get to 60 in just over 8 seconds is very impressive.

So, after one day of being totally impressed, I have order one with pro media, sun protection glazing and full black panel display.

Pretty tidy performance from these N47D's 8) and those figures are amazing.

Be interesting to hear how you get on with it long-term.

I'm a bit OCD about fuel consumption spreadsheets having done them for all of my cars so time will tell.

My one is due on the 10th of April.

If I remember correctly, Andy (D4), has a 520D M Sport so he will no doubt have some info but the ED is better on fuel than the mainstream 520d.

I tried one of these a few weeks back in sport guise.

What a fantastic car. The 8spd gearbox is a joy and certainly helps you to keep the car on the boil should you wish to give it large. The paddle shift works beautifully, too.

The interior is a very nice place to be and even on what was a basic-ish model - very well appointed. The PDC system is superb as well. The pictorial assistance along with the beep really helps you to avoid any sort of issue.

It tracked really well over poor road surfaces and was very responsive under hard cornering. It certainly hides it's bulk very well which is a true indicator of a good 5 series.

I can only imagine what the 535d must feel like.
