Rebuilt engine oil usage

Post by Charles » Thu Apr 01, 2021 6:22 pm

I've managed 3500 miles in a year since the big rebuild and I've used 1/4 litre of oil.

Must be the new piston rings!

Charles, I don’t think this is bad, you will expect to use some oil bedding in, especially oiling of the bores.

The old YB in the Cosworth used to drink a half litre a month and this was even recognised in the owners manual.

I should have been clearer - when the original engine was new, I used to burn through a litre of oil every 3000 miles which was perfectly acceptable and expected. Over time this worsened to a litre every 2000 miles and by the time I bit the bullet last year, was worse still at 1500 miles per litre. That said, ALPINA spec was that typical usage was a litre every 1000-1500 miles

This time round, I am on target for a litre every 14k miles - excellent job CPC :D

The first 180k miles were using 0W-30 and then, after rebuild #1, I changed to 5W- 40.

This time round, I chose to to stick with 5W-40.
