E34 B10 3.5 returning from hibernation

Post by tennyson344 » Mon Mar 22, 2021 9:40 pm

Pulled her out the storage unit to let some other bits out and thought best to share a snap.
She had the sills professionally replaced 18 months ago and some of the little annoying marks sorted like the mirror area and a scab on one of the back doors near the window trim.
Shame the original exhaust was replaced before my ownership.
Taking the exhaust off Saturday to check condition and may try find a better replacement. Any suggestions or a nice system welcome.
Feels so small and quirky compared to a friends new 5!

Great thanks for the pointers. Pretty sure the old pipe, (certainly the middle section), has had its day.
I’m wondering if the manifold would be standard 535i or whether the conversion would changed that too but I’m sure that’s in fine fettle. Just curious.
I’ll be getting her out for an Mot in the next few weeks so will get some more pics 👍
CSL is my brothers, amazing car to drive and rightly or wrongly he is about to have the manual conversion done by some reputable firm he’s recently come across. I think it’ll be perfect with manual.

Yeah Seen a few YouTube vids of manual csl
Also on here we have had a couple of e46 touring alpina converted to 3 pedals
Re manifold if it was like the e30 or that era they were made by Janspeed 6 branch mated to the boysen alpina system

If it’s like the e30 conversion the alpina manifold will be tubular and not the std cast manifold. This should be obvious in the engine bay. There are a lot of good bespoke exhaust makers around that maybe able to help.

Helping my mate do a hartge tribute to my old e30 touring. We managed to get a salvaged exhaust at considerable expense. The front down pipe has a slight kink and the rear box is got a hole in it. The plan is to get an exhaust guy in Scarborough to straighten and repair, or remanufacture and move the hartge tags over. He has already done custom headers for the track car for us.

That’s a great looking B10. Which build number is it?

Not sure on the e34 must admit but normally the UK cars (i.e. RHD) such as the e32/e23/e24 etc couldn't fit a tubular header due to space restrictions caused by the steering gear so the std cast manifold was retained. It may have had some work to improve flow a little but have no record of that on one of these.

Plus I'd say the majority of these B10's had lost their system due to age/rot and the fact that the next few owners on in the cars life either didn't realise it had been changed and replaced it with a std 535i one OR a genuine one was far too expensive.

Fantastic looking B10 and a very nice CSL too.... I think the manual conversion is a great idea - it's how it should have been from the factory.

Thanks for the additional info and comments. Should look better in a few weeks as I’m going to carry out some detailing and likely get an expert out to polish her up.
Number 7834. Manual.
Grey cloth interior which I guess is marmite but I like it as you just never get cloth these days and it’s so comfortable.
Interesting mention about the RHD having different manifold! Hopefully I’ll have a good gander Saturday when removing one bits.

Please keep us updated with pictures. This 5 series shape is by far the most angriest looking car. Its so menacing. I love it...
