B3 3.3 Saloon #450 last of the pre facelifts

Post by bss325i » Thu Jun 04, 2020 9:12 pm

It was never going to long before i ended up with another Alpina after selling E92 B3 #185. I was loosely looking at various E46 Alpinas with an aim to replacing our late 330Ci M sport when a regular customer of ours ended up with with this B3 as part of deal so i made an offer and it was mine!

"Tripple black" being Cosmos black with black leather and black headlining and a decent enough spec.

In addition to the factory spec it has a dealer fit manual rear blind and..... genuine AC Schnitzer pedals!

There is a Sytner used car bill of sale in the history when the car was three years old and on that invoice it included the above plus a set of AC Schnitzer wheels! Very strange for someone to remove the original softline Alpina wheels in place of the Schnitzer wheels but at that point in time BMW were selling Schnitzer parts and conversions through the dealer network as BMW UK were the official importers for a while before returning back to Rossiters in Kings Lynn.

Thankfully someone at some point replaced the Schnitzer wheels with the later "crinkle cap" Alpina classics which is a bonus as i prefer them on the E46 to the earlier soft lines.

114k miles with reasonable history although a bit light in recent years, not many miles done between MOTs in recent years. An inspection on the ramp and a road test prior to purchase has revealed some issues to sort out but nothing out of the ordinary for an ageing E46 plus a relatively corrosion free body with pretty good paint.

Nice one Barry
I see why u was after the B3 book pack
Interesting on the wheels point I thought the later wheels were due to the cross over of LCI

Looking good Barry, I hadn’t realised it had the “wrong” wheels.

Just make sure you keep it away from that engine hoist.

A week or so after i bought the car it was time to go through the car address some of the issues. Parts ordered it was time to work through the following list of work.

Inspection 2 service
Brake fluid change
Water pump and thermostat replacement
New viscous fan, blade and cowling
Oil filter housing gasket
Cam cover gasket
A/C regas
New tyres
Sort the rattling centre caps
New wishbones and Z4M eccentric bushes
New track rods
Replace the yellow tag rack with purple tag
New lower steering coupling

Reason for the fan replacement. The jettisoned bladed put a nice dent in the bonnet but was easily removed by dent man.

Replacement of the cam cover revealed very clean engine internals which was a pleasant surprise given the mileage.

A set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 in the correct 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 replaced the worn Pirreli P zero's which had incorrect 40 profile rears.
