Just to say that the propshaft for a B3S with an auto box is from a 330d - discovered this last year and been meaning to post this up for you

Thanks useful info and encouragement!

RE prop that explains why the splines on the join in the middle on the 330D prop are bigger than the M3 prop as the 330D creates alot more torque so is stronger to cope i guess.

I just want to drive them rather than fix restore. If i keep these 3 then i'll be ok nothing else i fancy? apart from a B8, e34 M5 touring, e38 B12, F31 B3.......

This is the auto box and torque converter. I'm thinking of selling these off as i won't be switching it back to auto. Anyone after a spare? Box worked fine and has had a fluid change in its life.

TC is an alpina unit i fitted about 35k ago so is in perfect working order.

I've got a big drum of the correct oil for these gearboxes. I'd have to check but must be half full so about 10 litres

So the back of the prop has been re tubed. I gather this is quite tricky, to weld both ends so the prop is perfectly straight. They said its sleeved a touch on the inside to help with this. Also balancing it properly with the CV joint on the rear is difficult but it measures up ok so lets hope thats the big drama out the way

Can't wait to have a go!

Did you ever enquirer at Alpina for the cost of their prop?

They would basically do what you have done, match the E36/E46 M3 gearbox to a standard E46 diff..

Cheers,

Shes home, totally different animal now i have to say. I'm used to the 84bhp roadblock van but this never used go this well! Very naughty and pulls/feels quicker through the gears. Especially top end, plus you get to use feel the low end torque that gets masked by the slip on the torque converter. Feels grunty like you only need half the gears.

Reminded me of the E36 alot

Only got to tramp it round the motorway after an epic train saga - theres a reason people hate the trains!

Still the right decision for me i think.

Yes Ali CDV is gone, its just got a braided line in there.

Its very naughty, i like it more and more i drive it. Needs 4 tyres now.

Just got key fobs working again, my antenna/ signal amplifier in the tailgate had failed so the remote locking hasn't worked since october. Sorted that today with another unit from the scrappy. Doesn't need coding so easy DIY fix

Just need to fit HK looms to 2 more doors and thats 95% finished. Sort PDC out as not working since conversion

I've a dicky Xenon also, not many E46s have xenons it seems. Rear beam bushes need doing, plus the dohnut bush in the steering linkage is worn

its actually a bit lower than the gear speed calculator suggested.

70mph in 6th is 2500RPM so the same as an auto in 5th i seem to remember. So no shortage of go in any gear.

It could pull the 3.15 ratio alpina use and i'm not a million miles off with the 3.38 at the minute. I think long term i might switch the 3.15 but its ok as it is.

The alpina ratio would give some nice motorway legs

Cracking on with more jobs yesterday with a little window of time appearing!

Image

I noticed this rather dusty wheel compared to the other 3, so the famous 330i calipers strike again. Time for a motorsport repair!

Image

As suspected, the dust seals just aren't very good on these calipers for some reason.

Image

Rather than pop the whole piston out i've done it in situ, as i've taken the piston out before and had a fucking nightmare getting it back in and dust seal all on properly. So i've cleaned everything up and lubed the pads/ sliders etc

Plus i'm not 100% yet on which direction i'm going on the front brakes and if i'm going to replace them with a bigger setup.

Image

some much needed handbrake adjustment! I don't know about you but when it was auto i always used P and never used the handbrake. Now we are manual a decent handbrake is needed! So thats sorted nice and tight on 3 clicks

Wiring in the clutch switch, this was lifted from a diesel touring from the scrappy last week. The switch itself and the plug with some loom. its 3 wires off the switch, two can be tapped into the brake light switch and the third runs to the DME. Was quite a fiddle fuck fest doing this.............

no cruise still! Basically The diagnostics was playing up and wouldn't change the build order to manual. So at the minute the instruments have been told its a manual so the car starts and runs drives fine. But! when plugged in the car still thinks its auto, so my reckoning is cruise won't work until this is sorted and the same for the rear parking sensors. As the DME is still looking for the auto box etc and its canbus and i don't fully understand it!

At least it brakes proprerly again now, and the handbrake works. Small steps and all that
