I pay about £280pa for a fully comp SDP, Commuting & Business (2k) cover with agreed value of £14k on my Touring. 20k miles pa, 20 years protected NCD, clean licence and one no fault accident. Garaged somewhere in Oxfordshire.

This is part of a 5 car fleet on an Admiral multicar policy.

Yes, I know I dont own one. However these questions are very difficult to make comparisons as much of the quoted premium is based on a host of factors. There are some insurers who do not recognise no claims discounts and others that do. But factors such as age, occupation, driving experience, post code, garaged, annual mileage, business mileage, your own price assessment, tracker fitted, single or multi car policy, thefts in your post code, breakdown cover, excess, screen excess, car loan replacement, European cover, additional drivers, young drivers, any convictions and so on an so forth. These are totally different for for every individual.

Whilst people can be generous and tell you their personal circumstances, it is difficult to draw any conclusion from these offerings.

I beg to differ!

My post reveals that Admiral:
1. List the E46 B3S (not that many insurers do so this is valuable)
2. Accept agreed values (not many insurers do so this is also valuable)
3. Recognise NCDs (ditto)
4. Offer cover for a range of different driving circumstances (ditto)
5. Provide a multicar option (ditto - if relevant)
6. Recognise reduced risk by garaging the car overnight (otherwise why would I mention it)

Of course, detailed quotes will differ based on specific circumstances but if this sort of thread provides some comparative value then it is valuable to the people concerned. This is, of course, my personal opinion ...

Hi, I am with Classic line (no NCD although have insured with them on my previous TVR and 2.5-16) at £212, agreed value and 3k miles per year. I'm 69, living in Oxfordshire. Must have a look at Admiral next renewal.

Cheers

Charles I accept those factors which you point out in respect of Admiral. I can certainly say for my own insurance on the B7 that my insurer provides a quotation which reduces the premium and takes into account:-

1. garaged
2. tracker
3 no claims discount
4 amount of annual mileage
5 will give an agreed value
6 will insure in connection with business

That provider is Markerstudy via A Plan Thatcham branch. Maybe it will work with them for E46 B3?

Touchy subject with me atm. I wanted to insure the VW R32 for 1 month to get MOT and some driving in to ensure everything was ok before handing it over to the grandson. Then the insurance to be transferred to my M3. Lancaster assured me that would be no problem but there would be an additional £40 for the M3. This seemed reasonable. The R32 policy was £248 so under £300 for the M3 which is in the area I pay. Fast forward 1 month and the £40 has now become £140. On complaint that this was not the deal agreed they asked if I minded them checking the recording of the original deal. I had no objections. Amazingly they haven’t been able to find the recording. I asked how much refund I would get if I cancelled the policy after less than 1 month. £59. I payed the £140 reluctantly as it was the lesser loss.
I also (unusual for me)read the policy and now find that as the M3 is insured on limited mileage if any of the other cars I have are on limited mileage then the insurance is invalid should I make a claim on the M3.? Obviously I have a phone call to make on Monday.
Lancaster are the broker but the insurance is with Markerstudy. I’m going to stop whinging now

That is a complex situation which I am not qualified to answer with any certainty. I have never dealt with Lancaster so cannot comment on their performance, policy or procedures. One of my main reasons for dealing with A Plan Thatcham branch is that I know I can speak to the MD if I ever had a problem I felt some of his colleagues either could not resolve or could not to my satisfaction. His name is Henry Francis.

Fortunately in 11years of ALPINA ownership I have not had any issues, I have switched car to laid up policy during Covid and been given a refund, I have also got cars on limited mileage. If I think I am going to exceed it I just call them up and have never paid anything very much to add an extra one or two thousand on the vehicle.

This is not a plug for A Plan, I am sure there are many excellent brokers and deals to be had, I am probably lazy but I just feel confident that any issue would be resolved.

Thanks all for input
I’ll give u some info as to asking
I’ve been with classic line for 8 years no claims or never gone over my 5k mileage, recently with change at work I’m doing a lot more miles but it can vary week to week so I’m close to going over. Long story short I was told even if I exceeded by 1 mile I would have to pay 274 for this no if or buts I thought there maybe some flexibility as Norman has stated as I know some may give u a few thousand no issue or a small fee but this cost is over 50% of my annual with was 441 last year so they say now they won’t do 7k and I’ll be on 12k which I’d never do so loading up would leave my annual this November at over 700!
Whilst I appreciate I can have my agreed value and obviously enjoying using the car more there is a risk I can’t see how it warrants it. Brokers paid lip service I am still trying to get t&c from aegus who insure me I can’t speak to them directly. Also another query I had was with windscreen if I took it BMW to ensure genuine screen I was originally advised I can and insurers will cover cost less the 150 excess as it not their approved provider, they now say they will pay 150 towards it less the 150 excess and rest from me. I’m just annoyed that I have this bespoke policy and stayed with them as they say I can choose and use whoever I want as it’s a rare car but it’s beginning to sound like it’s your generic policy that say the same thing. I’ll have no choice to pay it but I’ll be looking elsewhere cos I feel as my agreed value isn’t worth the paper it’s written on & I don’t think my brokers have done anything to help me it’s like computer says NO.
Henry I feel the same as you and I have very little confidence should I need to make a claim as it stands at present
Thoughts

Interesting Hap. I had screen go on the B7, was originally told to take to national windscreens and pay 75 excess. Lady Manager said to me , "we can only fit a clear screen and not the tinted one you have, it will also not be marked BMW, we cannot confirm you auto rain sensor will work and nor your automatic headlight dimmer". This was at Crawley.

Contacted broker A Plan and said " your policy states I insured a B7", yes they agreed. "I therefore want original screen supplied and fitted". Insurance Company agreed it was around 1300 pounds I believe and Sytner Nottingham checked the attachments worked. Next year excess went to 100 pounds.

I guess check the wording of your Policy and it is says xxx model ALPINA this insist it is replaced like for like.

Hi Hap,

B3s Cab, insured through APlan Thatcham with Markerstudy, 6K limit including 1K business miles. Agreed value (via appraisal form). They also insure my 335d. Premiums are reasonable and I suspect I could get cheaper but having had a total loss on my 325d, the claim process was simple and I was impressed with the service so am staying put for now.

Any help?

Mike

I've not been asked to show evidence, apart from confirming that I've not gone over the overall limit. I do keep a record of business mileage by car because I claim each mile back from my company. More importantly, I had a visit from HMRC a few years ago who asked for all of my company records...I think they were a bit surprised that I had some evidence to back up what had been claimed! Nothing special, just an excel of date, location, car and miles claimed

Any help?

Mike

Yeah that’s similar to my 5k except there is no limit just combined annual mileage

Mine is insured in Connection with my business, which does not mean commuting to business, I worked from he for 12 years. I state a number of business miles but have never been asked to provide a breakdown of them. However, anyone who is claiming mileage allowance from HMRC at 45 ppm will need to submit to their Company some kind of mileage claim. Therefore, very easy to produce and exact record.

In the course of the 12 months cover if I feel I might exceed I call them up an they charge a nominal fee for a couple of thousand additional miles.
