Extending a Vehicles Warranty

Post by Grumpyjohn1957 » Tue Jun 15, 2021 9:08 pm

Planning ahead...A B5 isn't the kind of car you can easily work on yourself!

Any thoughts or real life experiences out there regarding BMWs extended warranty offering?

Given the cost of replacing things should they break on a "newish" Alpina, would it make sense?
No idea on likely premiums yet, I'm too far off needing to ask.

Chap called Norman on this forum covers his b7 under warranty. Works for some cars others not worth it in my opinion. My Z4M was under warranty had around 2.5K worth of work done to it. You may also want to look at where you would have the work done as my experience if BMW dealers is that they are not going to have a Alpina specialist to hand :)

From a strictly rational perspective it’s not worth it since the warranty provider sets the prices in such a way that means they will turn a profit, so the odds are that on average you will pay more in premiums than you will get back in warranty work.

This ignores the fact that a subset of people can comfortably afford the annual premium (£300 for my previous car, an M240i so naturally a B5 would be expected to be pricier) but might be financially crippled by, for example, the bill generated by the engine self-immolating. It also ignores the peace of mind aspect of not having to worry in the unlikely event of a big bill being thrown up. Peace of mind is an under-rated commodity in life and I will most likely be extending the warranty on my car when the time comes on that basis.

The alternative would be to put aside a few hundred quid aside every year into a rainy day fund for the car.

The last extended warranty I purchased was on a E91 330i (manual) for a couple of years back in 2010. It was the offical BMW warranty and I had the comprehensive option with breakdown cover too (as opposed to drive trian only). It cost me something like £50 per month and so long as the direct debit wasn't cancelled the warranty was in place regardless of mileage (and that it was serviced on time by BMW). Given that the price was reasonable, in my opinion, it was a no brainer.

Fast forward a few years later and I ran a Porsche 996 (20 years new, 90K on the clock, and an impecable maintenance record); the enignes are known to be an issue and rebuilds easily come in at £8-10K. Then a Porsche 997 (8 years old, 50K miles, and good dealer service history); this had the "reliable" PDK (dual-clutch) transmission, but frightfully expensive to replace/repair. In both cases, once the dealer's (Porsche speciailst) in house 3-month warranty expired I decided to underwrite any failures myself. Why? The premiums being asked were >£1500 per year; the excesses were high; the underwriters/administrators would have done anything to deny a claim (quite easy to find a reason on a 20 year old car); and besides which I had the money - though I would loath to have to spend it.

I too wonder what I'd do in three years time with my (hopefully) soon to arrive D3 S. I hear the BMW warranty premiums for an Alpina is equivalent to an M car - so high compared to a non-M BMW. In the case of a B3, the most expensive unit as a whole is the engine and this frankly is all but the same as the M3/M4, so possibly the premium is justified. For a D3 S, a fairer comparison is an M340d, and I suspect the premium for that is a lot less. I would happily pay the M340d warranty to BMW underwriters, and supplement any cost difference between Alpina specific parts and the BMW ones. However, I know that will not be an option on the table.

On the other hand I'm more likely to do the following. Annually invest whatever the BMW warranty premium is in some form of investment fund; have the car serviced on the dot with Sytner; and for additional peice of mind have a mid-interval oil service with one of the well recommended indes on this site. If something spectaular went pop I'd likely have Sytner address it, having first written a very polite email to Alpina to ask for a contirbution. Anything else, I fix it or have a local garage fix it or get one of the indes here fix it. For me self insurance is the way forward ... I think. Ask me in three years.

Other options ...

(1) form the Alpina Forum Benevolent Fund to pay out on big bill failures (>£2000 threshold) for any member.

(2) set up a Just Giving page.

I am the person called Norman who covers his B7 E65 with fully comprehensive warranty. What does it cost, around 2K a year. What does it cover - BMW fully comprehensive warranty.

How much have I paid - around 18k over 10 years, how much have I had back? 31K of warranty work, plus this year a new Supercharger which BMW say is 4700 plus vat plus labour.

I have now done 125K miles having bought it at 52K miles, so I feel I have done ok in terms of expenditure.

It works for me, I cannot comment on others vehicles or their experiences. I have had no issue with the work carried out by Vines BMW Gatwick under warranty which include, new supercharger, new Kat, 3 new boot pump mechanisms, endless modules and sensors, hard drive and other bits I cant recall.

I assume you have this on a direct debit in order for BMW to cover your B7, now over 100K miles. Have they increased the premium over that time?

Yes, I pay by direct debit as if the contract is broken it cannot be reinstated. I have to say to be fair I think it went up by 5 pounds per month this time around. But my view if that as long as I have had more in return that I have paid in premiums I am ahead. Its kind of strange but I was almost wishing for the supercharger to fail (it lasted 70K miles) so I would feel I was not paying out.

I cannot and would not advise anyone to do anything other than carry out their own risk assessment based on the cost of parts and the complexity of their vehicle. I have been told mine has over a mile of wiring in it . My aim is to keep the car going until such time it is beyond economic value and then reassess the situation.

Thanks guys some interesting perspectives on this (and humour!). Norries take and experiences are quite enlightening. I’ll need to establish if a new warranty would indeed continue to roll on past a 100K provided the premiums continue unbroken.
I did today have my 1st condition-based service at Sytners which involved new spark plugs. (Intermediate oils and any “bits” I have done by an indie whom I will continue to use).
Whilst coming away with a large bill I don’t actually regard it as extortionate, especially from a main dealer. The parts component was very reasonable even when compared to aftermarket or via BMWCC.
Anyway, I got a sheet full of green ticks and the techy who did the work described the car being in superb condition despite me regularly exploiting its full potential. (in a mechanically sympathetic way of course)

Yes, the warranty issue may work for some and not others, its not perfect. I have never had any claim rejected of disputed by the Warranty people. However a word of caution, if you still have the service booklet make sure it is stamped. If you have a vehicle whereby its held in the cars computer, then you should be aware of this situation which I discovered. Despite having my book stamped I found that Sytner Nottingham and Vines BMW Gatwick had failed to put the service information into the main computer for BMW which the warranty people access. How did I find out? Well strangely at BMW Vines they said the warranty people wanted to see all the stamps in my book. When I started using the very good BMR Performance that told me that neither of these two Main dealers had entered my information, probably because they simply could not be bothered.
