Alpina - BMW warranty and extended warranty

I am wondering how people get on with no warranty. I still have fully comprehensive warranty from BMW which is based on having the car fully serviced by approved BMW dealer and a rolling non broken monthly payment.

In the past few weeks I have had a new catalytic converter and associated manifold pipe work fitted, cost with labour around 3K and now the hydraulic pump which works the automatic boot closure and opening around 1000 plus labour plus vat so another large chunk.

Now I heard that a chap with a B5S has had nearly 40K of warranty work including 3 superchargers and a transmission box etc

How can you live without warranty?

I think a lot of these H1 engines cars are just coming into the period where the big ticket items are expiring. Remember you only hear about the things that go wrong not the cars that are ticking along with no real issues. I think I will drop off the warranty soon as now I have a few major items seem to recently I would think it should be clear for a few years now,
It is easy to be paranoid about the next breakdown but I prefer to enjoy the car and providing I look after it service wise it should, bar bad luck be like any other car and plod on happily.
You can always put the warranty payment into your own savings plan as a pool for the day you need it.

I maintained a BMW warranty on my car until the mileage went over 100k and they wouldn't cover me anymore.

Thankfully this covered the first HG replacement, a replacement flywheel, replacement exhaust downpipes from the manifold to the cats and a new back box.

In my case, it was worth it but that is the benefit of hindsight.

At the end of the day, it comes down to what level of risk you are prepared to accept.

I've continued with the warranty on my car and have plenty of thoughts on this topic from experience. Ultimately though this is lottery - you can be lucky or can be very unlucky!

My car had an extensive warranty history prior to my purchase - this fact and my limited research told me the B10 V8/S can be a temperamental car in some aspects - age and mileage obviously catch up on these cars, no matter how well engineered and rectification isn't cheap.

My car has done 102k miles now. Contrary to what most say BMW will cover the car after 100k - to do so you need to be paying monthly instalments before 100k is up, and obviously have uninterrupted monthly payments after 100k.
The main issue you face at this mileage is the wear and tear clause. I've had various jobs done on the car under warranty over the last 2 years but almost each case has required a "discussion" from me to the warranty chap/aftersales manager to argue why the failure isn't just wear and tear. It's tiresome and made me think many times what the point? Especially given the cost of maintaining the warranty. I was on the brink of cancelling and taking my chances.

However recently the lottery came into play. My car went in for investigation for yet another oil leak (I've had several, and been bloody annoyed by the dealer's lack of ability to sort them). This time timing chain covers diagnosed as the culprits. Upon removing the covers the timing chain guides were cracked and broken. The warranty covered a strip down, cleaning out the engine, 4 new chains, guides, oil pump, all gaskets and seals replaced. They also found both the vanos units on their way out. All replaced. £7k bill to the warranty company!
Totting up the repairs v instalment costs, I've definitely been better off with the number and cost of repairs I've had done.

Of course these repairs could all be done by a competent specialist and save considerable amounts on labour rates v dealers. But ultimately it comes down to how fortunate you are with the car and failures in the first place. A tough one to call!

The above post echos my experience. I am very pleased that the approx. 5K amount of work this month is coming from my monthly premium.

And here comes the Non-Alpina curveball....


E60 M5 into year 3 of ownership, was purchased as an Approved Used Example so 1 year's Warranty which covered me for Both Throttle Actuators and the Gearbox recieving programming (Red Cog of Death)

When it came to renewing said Warranty, it was £2400 per year.....

2 Years on, aside from normal servicing/brakes/tyres i've only replaced the Clutch Position Sensor (£250+VAT Part, 3 hours labour) and the Altenator (£700+VAT Part, 3 hours labour)

Both probably would of been covered by the Insured Warranty, however i'm still quid's in!

Clearly new cars come with warranty, used approved cars from BMW dealers inc ALPINA come with warranty. It is possible to buy a used car which has been fully serviced at the given intervals by a BMW but has no warranty when purchased and then obtain warranty on that vehicle.

True, but be aware that the rate is correspondingly much higher than a car that has maintained an uninterrupted warranty by BMW from new.

Case on point, my B10 is 17 years old, has over 100k on the clock and the BMW warranty costs half of what I was quoted by BMW for the D5 BT which is 5 years old and 80k miles. Difference? B10 has been warrantied from new, D5's was never renewed past manufacturer's offering.
