Just renewed the insurance on my B5. I was with LV last year and paid £346. My renewal this year came through at £357. I checked on a comparison site and LV came out with the best quote at £330. A quick call to them and they have renewed at the lower price so pleased with that - £16 cheaper than last year.

Flippin 'eck Paul, that's really good. Do you keep the car in a bank vault live in a gated enclave and drive 50 miles a year by any chance?

Absolute 'mare again for me this insurance game, talk about sublime to the ridiculous.
Company I was with have withdrawn from vehicle insurance so ran a few online quotes couple of months back, all looked very promising.
Gets nearer the time, feeling smug, picked up where I'd left off.
Either: Now won't do it or suddenly upped the cost considerably. Spent hours on it. Specialists not much help but A Plan at Thatcham got close.
Add the frustration of the classic time wasters into the exercise. "What's an Alpina?" Is it a B10? The B5 is only goes up to 2012, etc. Grrrrr

Ended up similar to last year (few quid less) paying over double yours with £1K excess, which I think is a lot.
SDP Commute & Business, 20k miles annual.
Clean Licence, wife with SP30.
Extra Security in car and at home. No added frills apart from NCD protection.
Maybe I expect too much?

I have to say I was surprised it came out so reasonable. It's probably a best case quote though as I'm no longer young, have a safe post code, max no claims and no points.... It's insured for 12K miles with business use although I don't do much of the latter these days.

Maybe it was too good to be true…. I’ve just had an email to say they no longer insure ‘this type of car’. They are cancelling the policy as of 1st November and have already refunded me the balance. I can’t believe it! We’re currently away on holiday and now I have to try and rearrange new cover? What a joke!

Is that going to be a massive ball ache if you have to declare that you’ve had a policy cancelled every time you purchase insurance?

I’d not even considered that tbh…..

I know jack about the insurance industry so I could be completely wrong but I do know the question tends to be phrased in such a way that cancellation for any reason needs to be declared and doing so makes getting insured harder and more expensive. Bilateral ball ache considering it’s not straightforward getting an Alpina insured at the best of times.

In which case I would be kicking off in a big way given the issue has been generated at their end rather than because you made a mistake. Since the insurance hasn’t actually been cancelled yet I wonder if you could simply ask them to “cancel the cancellation” and let you stop the cover yourself, before 1 Nov?

I’m going to ring them tomorrow and see what’s going on. I can’t believe they can just turn round and say, actually we’re not insuring you anymore, mid term. I could understand more if it was at renewal time.

If it was the other way around, I would face a significant penalty for cancelling my side - I like how those rules don’t seem to apply for them.

I will also be asking the question about the ‘cancellation’ - is this something I would need to declare in future as it was their issue, not mine.

So annoying!

I’ve just spoken to them and they couldn’t really give any further information - they have changed their underwriter policies and they no longer insure this type of vehicle. They were very apologetic. I asked about having to declare the cancellation - they said it’s not an issue as it’s nothing I have done. That only applies if I had missed a payment etc and they had cancelled.

Looks like I need to search round for a new policy by the weekend then - far from ideal. :-(

I've tried a few comparison sites and guess who comes out each time as the best quote - yep, LV! Ridiculous. I was tempted to take up the policy and just see what happens but I'm probably asking for more grief. Tesco Bank were just a few quid more so I've gone with them instead - came out to £330 again which is exactly what I paid with LV a couple of months ago. Fingers crossed this one sticks....

I wonder if this has anything to with the fact that LV are in danger of being taken over by a bunch of asset striping Hyenas :think , who do not give a stuff about customer loyalty.

I had been with Frizzells for many years, they were then taken over by LV.
We have 3 cars insured with LV, on a multicar policy, be interesting if they refuse to insure my Alpina, in fact all my Alpinas have been insured through LV :?

Just done an online quote for my E93 B3S, LV were not on the list at all

It is very strange. Especially that they are still quoting for my car. I got to the point where I could click to confirm the policy so looks like it would have gone through.

Be interesting to see if any other Alpina owners on here have issues.

I've been with LV for quite a few years now and they have always been competitive, renewal is due next month

I've a multi car insurance policy for my D4 and my wife's Golf GTD. They are quoting the D4 at £446 (similar to last year) and the GTD at £217.
Ran a few alternative quotes and the D4 is coming out with Churchill at £360 and the GTD at £203 (also with Churchill)

LV don't price match so looks like I will be changing insurer

Pete,

We had multi car with LV, and at renewal, it turned out to be about £250 cheaper to insure the cars separately. Still with LV! Bonkers. Insurance companies really are a law unto themselves.
