Price for a 'newish' D4

Post by Dunc64 » Thu Aug 25, 2022 9:12 am

Hello all,
I have seen a D4 that I'm interested in. Approx 20,000 miles, Reg 2018, extras are pro-nav and Lavalina - which seems to extend to the door cards and bottom part of the dash. It looks pretty clean, but I am wondering about the price. The seller wants over £35,000.

I know Alpinas are relatively expensive, and comparisons are very hard to find, but I can't help wondering if I would be better off with a newer 335d or 340i, both of which would be quite a bit cheaper.

Any input gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.

There are only four D4 Coupes (all pre-LCI) with Lavalina, and they are all I which means it's not extended and there is one Cabrio which is II. None of these cars are 2018 registered so best guess you're looking at #259 which was up with a dealer in Wolverhampton. They had incorrectly described it as Lavalina I when in actuality it has Dakota leather with the extended leather dash in nappa.

It also shows as sold on their website, although the fact it's still untaxed, the last V5 was issued back when Sytner sold it and it had a fresh MOT 3days ago might suggest the sale isn't complete yet.
https://www.williamssalesltd.co.uk/used ... /20552214/

The extended leather is a nice extra which adds so ambience to the interior but it was very much cheaper than either Lavalina option:
- Dakota Leather was £1,640 & extended leather was £1,050
- Lavalina I was £4,875
- Lavalina II was £8,740

General pricing is never really going to stack up from a purely logical head over heart stand point. Compared to a 435d M Sport you're probably looking at £5-10k difference in asking price. From watching recently, it's definitely a buyers market for the D4's most have been for sale 6mths plus and those that have 'sold' in reality seem to be moving round dealers without truly finding a buyer. So from that you may conclude the asking prices are too ambitious. :think

Thanks Bob,
The intel on this forum is great. The car you describe is correct. No 259.
It's not for sale because I have it reserved at the moment.
Looking at the pictures it could be Dakota leather. I used to have a 535, and it looks a bit like that - embossed finish etc.
I will feed back when I have been to see it.

Ah, that makes sense, let us know what you think when you have viewed it.

It's definitely not Lavalina in #259, as you say there is too much texture/grain in the leather and the panel layout of the leather on the backrest is entirely different to the Lavalina and Merino leather offerings. You can easily check the build spec in mdecoder.com if you have the full BMW VIN, I only have the last 7-digits unfortunatley.

Attached a couple of pics from #051 and #069 which both have Lavalina I

Lovely looking car but the blue leather and steering wheel with the light headlining and dark carpets just looks a little odd.
B5 G30 number 332 (development car)

D5 number 21

D3MT number 284 (gone but will be sadly missed)

Thanks everyone for the info.

I saw the car today. I thought it was a good looking car - enough about it, without being outlandish - subtle coachlines etc.
The interior - it looked like Dakota to me, embossed grain and not that soft. I have had 3 BMWs and they all had leather like this - although not blue?
In the flesh the blue steering wheel doesn't jar as much as you might imagine. The difference between the blue and black is not as stark as the available pictures might suggest. And the pale headlining looked okay to me, since it made the interior more airy.
The dealer wouldn't move much on price (not enough in my view given the market) so I walked away. I'll keep looking.

Is it a diesel you require? Seen you previously looked at the D3

Hello all,

My head, and wallet, says diesel because I do three runs a weeks of about 130 miles. Heart says petrol.... At the moment my car returns 30mpg on a long run, which isn't disastrous although super unleaded is quite pricy.
I am switching from 4.0L, V8 petrol, so diesel would be quite a change.
This is going to be my daily driver, which is why I am steering clear of very high mileage examples because I would be concerned that something might break and running costs would suddenly become very high. Therefore whatever I get will need some kind of warranty.

Cars under consideration: D3/D4, B3/B4, or BMW 340i/440i/M3 (I'll possibly rule out M3 as being too hard core) or 335d at a push.

Pretty sure #139 sold at the beginning of the year. It was MOT'd and new V5 issued late Jan-22 and then Corky spotted it late Feb-22. Also, the dealer's website has disappeared off the interwebs :eh
