Worth speaking to AlpinaJim, he has been maintaining it in your absence. No point duplicating efforts.

I'm new to the register and for a number of reasons a couple of sales fell through for the previous owner on the above car, and I've ended up the new owner of E39 B10 3.2 no169 (S992 CRC), which I'm really delighted about. I've had two E39s before, a 525i Auto Touring which I exchanged for a Pheaton in 2018.Three months later the Pheaton had gone and was replaced by my current 525d Auto Touring Sport. Both the 525's were/are great cars but I have to say the Alpina is the next level up. A smoother ride than my 525 sport and of course somewhat faster overall although the touring appears quicker off the mark.
I've thoroughly enjoyed reading around the forum so far and have just come across this thread by accident.
On another subject can anyone give me any guidance on where to get advice on getting the headlamps on E39's to work effectively. My local garage tried LED's in my 525 last year and although the light was much whiter, the fall off in light power meant that it was dangerous driving at speed because the main beam just didn't reach out far enough into the distance. If you have any experience of getting satisfactory main beam I'd love to hear it.
Kind regards
Andrew

I'm not surprised that LEDs were not effective as they require a very different reflective surface within the headlight assembly to maximise the light produced.Andrew Bluett-Duncan wrote: ↑Thu Sep 24, 2020 10:07 pmOn another subject can anyone give me any guidance on where to get advice on getting the headlamps on E39's to work effectively. You don't mention whether you have halogen or xenon lights, but either way, there are plenty of very good aftermarket bulbs to try.
I am a fan of Philips X-treme Vision which come in both halogen and xenon format and are a straight swap for your current bulbs. They have a nice clean white light and have a longer reach than the OEM versions.

Re: Question for B10 3.2 people
Hello Charles
Thank you for your recommendations. As to what I have at present? In the B10 its halogen bulbs for both dipped and main beams I think? In the 525 its Xenon on dipped beam and Halogen on main which has always seemed a strange combination but I presume that it was how it came originally? I'll try a pair of the Philips X-treme and see how i get on with them.
Kind regards
Andrew

Hello Jim
Thank you for the welcome. I'm thoroughly enjoying the ownership thus far and have used every excuse or reason to take her out for a jaunt in this last week or so. A really lovely car that can be driven fast, slow and all the land the lies between and still be a very rewarding drive whatever my mood. Wish I'd come across Alpinas before as I'd now like a touring version, might even replace my beloved 525d Touring....?
Kind regards

Totally agree with this - they are special at any speed. It’s the ride and handling that constantly amazes me. They are set up so well for UK roads. Compliant whilst retaining great body control.Andrew Bluett-Duncan wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2020 8:46 amA really lovely car that can be driven fast, slow and all the land the lies between and still be a very rewarding drive whatever my mood.

Hello Paul
You take the words right out of my mouth!
Incidentally came across your write up on your new B5 the other day and although I'm not particularly into modern cars, yours does really look the part and by the sound of it doesnt disapoint when behind the wheel either..?
Kind regards

Hello
I'd be persona non grata, in our household, if I even allowed myself to think of such a thing let alone said it out loud. I have in some peoples opinion, just bought a "completely unnecessary" car (the Alpina's our third car) which I indulged in just because I could. I bought it with some of the proceeds of my old MGA that went 3 or 4 years ago. So yes I might have written it on this forum, but my wife who is actually a very tolerant soul , doesn't read this and "obviously" it was just wishful thinking....!
However just out of interest, what's "the motor hub" and, do you know any more about the touring?
Kind regards
Andrew

Re: Question for B10 3.2 people
Motor hub is an infamous garage/multi storey carpark which has by far the worst reputation of any garage I know of. It has been mentioned it is really just a laundry for dodgy cash and they have been taken to court numerous times by trading standards.
