I'm bumping this up again as i've just replaced my torque converter on my B3s

I contacted ZF with the number in this thread and you can only buy brand new units now. They told me they will no longer sell reconditioned units. So i don't know if that means theres a limited number they have left in stock or what! It cost me just over £400 with the VAT

Its transformed my car i'm well happy.

That's still a significant saving over buying from Sytner/ALPINA directly - about 30% of the cost IIRC

Interesting thread, what are the symptoms of a worn torque converter?

the revs jumping when driving along or accelerting on the motorway say when it "unlocks" so you lose direct drive as such it it starts slipping. Fine at low revs not fine at say 70mph its should stay locked

I don't want to be the party pooper, but I had these symptoms on my car at 55k miles about 2-3 yrs ago and replaced the TC but the new one performed barely any differently from the old one... I have just learned to ignore them now!

Simon was it an alpina spec and if you don't mind what was the labour for the job?

its an alpina part for these cars, labour wise? Well you need to budget for about 9 litres of the oil which isn't cheap say £150 plus the £400 for a torque converter itself

Sumpgasket + filter kit e46 330i job (there are two types of 330 box listed on GSF's system!) was about £40 also plus no dramas along the way like knackered gearbox mounts, prop guibo, oil leaks, badly rusted exhaust studs on the join - this is given! and the labour costs.

I fitted it myself on a mates ramp and it was probably 6 hours start to finish for me. But i'm in no rush nor am i a mechanic on bonus for a job so some speedy blokes could knock it out quicker

I had however had it all apart before in this area of the car which made life easier . You could do it on a driveway but it would be a major ball ache as nothing is light! Plus you need a laptop with the sofware or diagnostics to bleed the gearbox oil level properly as the oil temp has to be between 30-50 degrees when checking the level. This is a mucky job!

Hello Together!

Beside my B5s i've bought a B3.3 Convertible, 2002 with 230.000 Kilometers on the odometer. Engine is rebuild since 100.000 Kilometers and runs fine - but on the way back home (from Buying the B3.3!) the Torque Converter Clutch doesn't engaged and all way the gearbox is sluggish. Yesterday i removed the oil pan, changed 5-6Liters of ATF Oil and changed the Filter. No change in TCC Using and Failure 0048, Torque Converter Clutch to much slip ...

Now i need a new TC and don't know where to buy in germany, becouse ZF Only sells new ones and no remanufactured ones.

Any idea?

Thanks =)

phil

Hi,
I'm fairly sure Driver Transmissions in Birmingham are ZF agents?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

You won't be able to buy a new one - many have asked both ZF and Alpina but they are NLA. However, you can get them refurbished.

I had mine done by Stephens Engineering who are located just outside Ware in Hertfordshire.

Thanks for the heads up on that Charles ! I’ve written a post about my TC on an older thread of mine regarding the idle valve , if you’ve got time could you read through please and let me know if what I’ve described is the dreaded TC rebuild needing done ? Thank you
