S & LSD

Post by PATAKET » Sun Mar 30, 2008 11:44 am

Just taking a look through the March 2008 English language brochure...............I thought the new S versions of the B5 and B6 mainly denoted the addition of LSD as standard spec, but this does not seem to be the case. LSD is listed as optional on the B5S saloon and estate and B6S cabrio but standard fit on the B6S coupe. Curious.

The main change to the B5S over the B5 seems to be power and torque increases courtesy of the change from Bosch Motronic ME 9.2.1 to 9.2.2. B5S saloon also gets 20 in. Classic wheels as standard (19 in. optional) while estate retains 19 in. Classics.

B7 not upgraded to ME 9.2.2, I wonder why not?

The B5s gets adjustable electronic suspension too.

The B7 is too late in its cycle and therefore it will not get the S treatment.

Why have Alpina decided not to add LSD to their car range? Seems a bit odd.. rear wheel drive, loads of power, yet no LSD..

I guess you could argue that it is in their car range - just optional.

I think they'd position it that they don't think the car needs one, but recognise that some drivers would prefer to have it - and so it's an option.

On the B6S coupe it is standard as I guess they feel that it suits the car

speculation on my part

They said they only developed the LSD because of fussy journos who like to hang the tail out for photoshoots - figured they'd make it standard for the B6 (not just B6S, note) as journos always seem to think the 6er is a sports car, for some reason...

Now, I tend to think an LSD is a good thing, but is it 100% essential on a B5? Nope.

just imagine one without all the electrics TC,DSC etc all that power and an open diff. Everytime it rained you would walk.

If i had the money i'd want a slipper too. i think 500bhp and no LSD is utter madness but i don't work for Alpina
