I'd echo what big blue has said, the Michelins on my car (G31 B5) feel good, but we've not much rain of late to feel the difference there. I found the Pirellis poor in the wet.
Just following up now we've had plenty of rain - the car is transformed in the wet vs ALP marked Pirellis. Previous I experienced both under and oversteer on wet roundabouts.
No such dramas on the MPS4S.

Interesting observation Asif.
I’ve always had my P.Zero from the Pirelli Performance Centre in Burton on Trent. (Next to the factory) Last time they had no stock, so I ended up at Kwik Fit of all places. Long story short, although they are Alp marked they might as well be a different brand.
Noisy, awful in the wet, spin up very easily in the dry, harsh ride when run at my previous pressure settings. Stamped made in Germany, - never looked on previous sets.
Bloody awful they are, can't wait to wear them out. Italian quality control?

Had the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S PS4S on for three months now and all is good. A mixed bag of weather which is good and all has been positive.

The other big one for me is how long they will last. The ALP Pirelli lasted 12/13k each so on a third set of tyres at the 25,000 mile mark.

Driving style is not like I am around the ring or santa pod every week either!

One thing I would say is that I use my brakes less in the D3S slowing down than ever before, with foot off the accelerator peddle and paddle gearing down changes. I am no engineer, but combined with the regen system on this model it should mean even less braking, which makes the performance of the ALP Pirelli even worse as a thought.

We will see how long the PS4S last!

Hmm interesting! If they are German made then the German QC may be to blame. Are they date stamped? And recent?
I have the Pirelli Alp fronts from my car (still have 5mm left so will sell them) - there's no stamp on them on where they were made.

Agreed, and I'm confident they will last a lot longer They certainly did on my D5 (38k out of the rear pair!)

Interesting observation on your D3. I've noticed my B5 can coast and maintain speed a lot longer than my D5 did - even downshifting for engine breaking is a lot more noticeable in the D5 vs B5. I'm sure someone will be along to explain this as there must be a technical explanation on the difference.

I think it's the higher compression ratio on diesel engines - provides more engine braking.

Good evening all.

I have just managed to get a G31 B5 Touring and it is on Pirellis.
Unfortunately picked up a puncture in a sidewall so will take the opportunity to change to PS4S's.

I have read many threads about tyre pressures, but could anyone recommend what pressures the Michelins should run at?
I saw somewhere 2.7 front and 3.0 rear.
I will start there and report back.

The Pirellis were set at 2.8 front and 2.9 rear. This seemed fine, but never managed to drive fast in the 200 miles I drove before the puncture!

Thanks

With my D3S, I've noticed the coast function is present. It took a little getting used to, but it's excellent and the integration between the coast and then re-applying the throttle is seamless. Something to do with the 48v mild hybrid tech.

Going back to the Pirellis, mine has the P Zero ALP tyres. They do understeer a bit compared to either a Conti SC7 or a Michelin PS4S. When replacement time comes, I expect I'll change them.

Just replied to your other post on this.

PS4S - do it, the car will be transformed.

I run my G31 B5 on Mich and run 2.7 front and 2.9 rear. Runs perfectly. I did however have to configure the TPMS to a bespoke setting, otherwise it was regularly warning me the pressure was low. I can't recall what the setting is off the top of my head, but give me a shout if you get stuck.

BTW I got 2 punctures on on mine when it was on it's Pirellis - never had one in 10 years on my other Alps on Mich. Could of course be total coincidence and bad luck, but I wonder if the rubber is made of chocolate! Drove like they were!

Hi
Thank you for the information.
2.7fr and 3.0r was a bit odd.
2.7fr and 2.8r is great; bear in mind these are cold temperatures.

I found a half load, less than 250kph setting which is 2.7 all round when cold.

Michelins transform the car in these cold, wet conditions. Not convinced there will be such an improvement in the summer months.

Slightly related to this chat, it looks like the replacement to the PS4S has now been released. Appears they have rebranded slightly to Pilot Sport S 5, so now a PSS5:

Sizes are quite limited so far though.
