Alpina B10 V8S - is it sacrilege to change the body colour?

Post by Metrics » Sat Dec 03, 2022 12:15 pm

Hi all.

Seeking input from the Alpina illuminati :D

Is it a bad move to change paintwork from the factory colour?

Work will be done to an as new, factory standard ie. perfect. Would it make a huge difference to how the car is perceived given the departure from its originality, given how rare these cars are?

Or if it's done to a factory standard, it won't have much impact?

I seek your counsel fellow Alpinaters, please vote your opinion on this, I'm keen to understand the thoughts of fellow owners.

If I were to buy a classic (other than an old nail to thrash) the originality of the package would be paramount. We become custodians of things rather than day to day users. If it’s destined to ultimately become a museum piece/objet d’ art then it should remain faithfully original.

You could always respray an original colour then vinyl wrap it in something totally tasteless for daily use! (Dakar Yellow for example? :) )

If it’s proposed to be an Alpina Green or Blue and keeping it then yes, especially if the original is another green or blue shade as it wouldn’t affect the V5 or marker it as a colour change, but if you are selling it on then buyers may suspect accident damage if they see two colours, so I’d stick original.

Normally I would say keep it original. But, if it's a keeper (which I suspect it will be) then it doesn't matter what a future buyer might think. If you are making the car perfect, for you to enjoy, then make it the perfect colour.

I’m going to break with the majority and say go for it Asim. You’ve had the YOB for years and if you do a colour change I’m sure you’ll have it for many years more. Ultimately, if it’s what you want, go for it. Pretty sure you mentioned wanting ALPINA Green before and since there aren’t any UK V8S’ in that shade you need to make one to get it.

Thank you for the input so far!

The direction so far is what I expected - as least by asking I now know

The car is originally Black Sapphire - just too boring for an Alpina, in my humble opinion.
