Ordering a New D5

Post by D3orbust » Sat Jun 25, 2022 10:30 am

After searching high and low for another suitable spec D5/B5 (ie no dark interior) I’ve given up and possibly looking at ordering my first ever brand new car.

The budget can’t stretch to a B5 though I would like it to as I want to add a few options, always loved the torque in my D5 so I’m happy to settle with another one.

The question is that if you were in the same position would you order the current shape D5s or wait for the new model which will probably be around £10,000 more as it is with the new D3s.
B5 G30 number 332 (development car)

D5 number 21

D3MT number 284 (gone but will be sadly missed)

The answer depends on how deep your pockets are? If money was not a real issue, of even if the 10K was not an issue then I would choose the newer vehicle.

Another thing worth remembering is the new shape D5 will come with the mandatory GPS tracked speed limiter    - if you enjoy using the torque, probs best to get a current model or your enjoyment will be limited to very short bursts...

The fitment of ISA will be mandatory for EU vehicles but, like auto stop-start, it can be turned off - initially you'd have to turn it off each time you start the car but, as it won't be a compulsory system in other markets such as the USA, it should be a simple coding change to set it to 'off' by default.

Ahh hope so! - I didn't realise it would be something the driver could turn off. Would doing so have implications on invalidating insurance I wonder?

Picked my new D5 up from Gary and Alex at Nottingham on Wednesday - love it!
So…I would order the current model - it looks (relatively) good value having avoided the hefty price hikes of other models - the D3/B3 is only a LCI update - the next D5 will be a whole new model so heaven knows where the pricing will be with current inflation.
No doubt the current model will suffer more depreciation but, looking at the next gen spy shots, the styling has a look of E60 at the front and the interior has the (not for me) full width touchscreen plonked on top of the dashboard similar to the LCI 3 series.
Perhaps this could be comparable to when the E60 replaced the E39 - not all progress is necessarily good!
There are still things I prefer from my F10/11 models over my G30/31s but as this is my fourth G series (D5s, M5, B5 touring previously) I love these cars!

the D5 is my wife’s car for 99.8% of the time and she absolutely loves it + my young kids have both grown up with ‘big Blue’ so they would need convincing as well
