ALPINA D3 Saloon (E90) 2.0L Diesel 200 HP - Rear Brake Pads/Discs

Post by gruppeb86 » Sun Dec 05, 2021 1:28 pm

Hi all. Having always found this forum very reactive and helpful, I wish to present my next qualm;

Following a health report from Strastone BMW earlier this year, I know my rear Pads and Discs are due for replacement. Problem is, I see no part number in the e90-91 D3 Parts Catalogue and as per usual, its like looking for a needle in a haystack (particularly regarding Discs), and if I do find something (Pads), there's a choice to be made between items with slight spec differences:

EBC Redstuff Pads (A hit!)

Valeo Discs (Coated or uncoated + Diameter/measurements!?)
https://www.autopartspro.co.uk/alpina-c ... brake-disc

Ideally, I would like an upgrade as "I feel" the vehicle and matching performance requires it, and ideally I would like matching pads and discs in respect of brand (Not that it probably matters!?). Really struggling to find matching EBC discs (whether grooved/slotted or neither) and "think" approaching Valeo direct maybe a good idea:

Love the car and want to keep forever more, but sourcing parts is really frustrating, especially when BMW garages are unwilling to give you part numbers which you can understand.

Anyways., looking forward to all the constructive responses for consideration.

Cheers all :!: :?: :boohoo

Not an expert on Alpinas but been buying stuff for BMW for years.

The brake parts seem to be a regular bmw parts number and if you copy it into eBay, there are a multitude of options, so don’t really see a problem. This often allows a cross reference to the vehicle description some 2.0 discs for mono and 3.0 discs for LCI? This then widens your search criteria rather than searching for D3. I have adopted this approach finding pads for XD3

In general terms the front axle does the majority of the breaking so std discs on the rear will be sufficient, updated pads can provide benefits, but I would always run a softer or same pad on the rear.

Personally I have used ebc spotted or slotted discs on a few cars and find them good wearing, but completely dislike the pads. Tried ebc on the track car last year as normal pads on back order and they were horrific, initial bite was poor and then fade after a few laps. My go to pad is performance carbon ceramic pads, I run these on the track car and the M3 but they are different compounds. If you need EBC stuff have a chat to my mate Rob at Larkspeed as they seem to be able to supply at very competitive price point.

I am just about bout to do the pads on the XD3 and have chosen a carbon ceramic pad from ATE as this std bmw pads create too much dust. Let’s see what they are like.

rule of thumb is, if its not in the Alpina parts docs its a std BMW part from its base vehicle so use the BMW vin to look those up. The D3 is really a parts bin special when you look at it in detail!

Thanks for the advice all.

AG just about summed it up really. Some may find this very useful:

Using the above, I've found matching Ferodo Discs and Pads.

I may be a bit late in replying but I have just changed all 4 discs and pads all round on my E90 MT.

I ordered the following from Auto Doc. All spec details will be on there incase you want to buy a different brand. Just put the below numbers into the search bar on AutoDoc.

Front disc: 09.C649.11
Rear disc: 09.9793.11
Front pads: P 06 038
Rear pads: P 06 038

All brembo parts. You'll need a brake pad sensor too. I am personally going to join the 2 wires together to create a closed circuit and make the sensor redundant. More hassle than it's worth and I check my car regularly for wear and tear.
