Steve's old B5S

Post by B10BRW » Wed Jul 14, 2021 7:25 pm

Talking to a chap today who said his brother has bought a Silver B5S.
Seems that this has a quad exhaust, although he was not aware that they normally come with twin exhausts.
Could only be Steve's.
Looks like he bought it from whoever Steve sold it to.

Now resides in West Sussex.

I am in contact with Mr S W Bone, the car was a plate D 13 SWB. He sold it to Jack Khan who is believe was a motor trader from West Sussex. Therefore on the basis of the 4 tail pipe conversion, I was say this is his former vehicle.

The car had an extra ordinary 74K worth of warranty work, the additional exhaust modification I believe incudes welded modification to the floor plan to accommodate the additional pipe work. I am uncertain that any of this enhanced the performance, and perhaps was purely for cosmetic purposes?

Many major components were replaced under warranty and recently a new supercharger. When it was sold it was in full working order.

I guess there are two thoughts about this vehicle, firstly lots of new replacement parts fitted mostly by Cooper BMW Sunderland, secondly why so many issues?

The valve stem seals (I think that's correct) were dealt with by BMR Performance this year.

Lets hope the new owner enjoys it and has trouble free motoring.

If anyone is interested Stephen Bone still has the original exhaust system for the B5S and I think some other parts. If any interest I will find out or put him in touch, they are no use to him as he has no intention of getting another ALPINA.

I think this car is in Walker's Autotech (near Billingshurst) at the moment.

I picked mine up last Friday (new shocks etc) and Andy showed me a silver B5. I hadn't clocked this thread until now to make a confirmed ID but it is almost certainly this car, particularly given that Andy said a dealer had brought the car to him. Unfortunately it seems that this car is going to need some very significant work on it... Andy's words were something along the lines of this car is commencing the journey you are coming to an end of - I took that to mean an engine rebuild and refresh of the older parts down to wear & tear.

In the meantime the B6 is running very nicely. All sorts of wear & tear items have been replaced - just waiting for the correct coils to arrive from Germany (!). Given the amount of stone chips, flying object hitting bonnet and other irritating parking knocks I am intending to have the body work re-sprayed in the coming months.

I would encourage whoever is going to pay for whatever work may be necessary to try and contact Stephen Bone. The car had 74K of warranty work done on it. I know it had the valve stem seals done at BMR this year and a Supercharger fitted by BMW Sunderland.

Now I accept that does not mean there are or are not other issues, but could this just fall into a category of " oh that car". If indeed someone did purchase it from a trader or dealer then they will have consumer rights protection. The car was sold privately by Mr Bone for 12K and it was in full working order it is claimed when purchased, who or what has happened since those months have passed is speculation, which I am not going to do.

However, I am reminded that Stephen told me BMR had advised him of some potential other issues and he declined to have that work done, I cannot say with any certainty exactly what that was as I have no technical expertise. It did relate to the engine as I recall.

Stephen had come to the end of his patience and desire to keep the vehicle, he no longer had the extended BMW warranty and I know that he felt potential future risk outweighed the reward of owning and driving the B5S.

This cars history is akin to War and Peace!

Two things of note. Not everyone takes heed of the information presented to them and buyer beware when buying from the dealer in question.

I speak from direct experience on both counts! The first one is specifically about this very car.

There is no doubt this specific car had a great deal of its recent life having parts replaced. It is almost extraordinary the sheer amount of items replaced, I think it was 5 superchargers? I guess if there was not extended warranty then the issues may have condemned the vehicle to another's ownership long ago.

Its fairly easy to say " I dont want a car, its trouble", when one has access to the history, can discuss it on a forum like this, knows the owners or car by association.

The new potential buyer may not do due diligence, may not have any reason to doubt the car, may have no technical expertise or knowledge.

The strength of this register is the fair and transparent discussion about a vehicle without blame or assumption. I hope whoever now is the owner does manage to have any issues resolved and that it is not a financial burden and we seek it restored to full working order.

Latest update, it appear the car is now in the hands of the dealer from Burgess Hill , Mr Khan. He called Mr Bone this week claiming the car broke down on the way back to Sussex when in collected it in February 21? It is now alleged it is "misfiring" and than he has bought an ECU for it.

I am surprised Stephen Bone is even entertaining call from the purchaser? To what extent? Its sold and he has no obligation, in law, to do anything.
