Alpina D3/B3 G20 Kidney Grill vs BMW M3 G20 Kidney Grill
Alpina D3/B3 G20 Kidney Grill vs BMW M3 G20 Kidney Grill
There is a lot of chatter about the new front grill for the BMW G2* M3/M4 and though it would be good to compare how different it looks compared to the Alpina G20/21 B3/D3 .
Everyone will have a preference and view on the new look from BMW and I know that it has raised a few eyebrows. I prefer the Alpina front end as a design and would be biased of course, but I have heard lots of negative feedback from traditional M enthusiasts that they think the BMW is so bad it puts them off buying one.
The two are the 3er and in the same colour to give you a like for like comparison as best as possible. On another note one feature I like on the D3 is the spoiler just above the windscreen which is very discreet but looks cool.

I personally actively like the B3/D3 but only with the chrome grill, I can’t stand black grilles on any car.

Alpina front end each and every time.
However, I have to say as someone who initially thought the new 4-series and M3/4 front end looked gopping, they are growing on me and it genuinely does look better in the metal. I remember the Bangle cars causing outrage before the social media era and now those are now looked upon rather fondly, more or less. I wouldn’t not own an M3 because of the grille, but rather because the Alpina is, for my usage, the better car.
As an aside, the day after I picked my car up I was admiring it from an upstairs window before I started panicking. I couldn’t see the spoiler you mention, having read about how it reduces wind whistle and I thought they’d just forgotten to fit it. I eventually realised, after trawling the web for a few photos here and there that you only get the spoiler if you have the pan roof. As it happens, the only niggle I have with my car at all is wind whistle, sounding like it’s coming from the level of the rear view mirror, above about 60mph.

The G21s I've driven have been very quite into three figures. All had the spoiler ahead of the pano-roof. Guess one could have it retro fitted.Jonnywishbone wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 7:22 pmAs it happens, the only niggle I have with my car at all is wind whistle, sounding like it’s coming from the level of the rear view mirror, above about 60mph.

I am with Jonny here, I thought the grill was a shocker when first aired, but is growing on me.
What I do like is now that there is clear distinction between Alpina and M cars and not just obvious to those with a trained eye.
Different markets, the M competing more against other ostentatious looking cars from MB/AMG, Japanese manufacturers etc.

I have to admit the new grill is growing on me too.
I was looking round this IOM Green machine in Sytner Sheffield recently waiting for the Mrs' car to be serviced...
The photos dont do it justice- the grill looks infinitely better in real life
(and the colour is stunning)

Yes I saw a red M3 this morning and it looked okay with a black grill, maybe the colour combination helps it look better. Over time we will just get used to it. Maybe a black grill subdues the size of a chrome one as they have got larger over the years and the X7 is a good example of how big they can be which is massive.
Off topic but mentioned earlier in the thread this is the spoiler above the windscreen which comes with a glass sunroof on the saloon and pano sunroof on the touring.
