Post by Swizzer2020 » Tue Jun 08, 2021 11:51 pm

Hi guys

Does anybody have any data or a measurement for the rear ride height of the Alpina F11?

Many Thanks!

Mine measures 70cm from the ground to top of the rear wheel arch. Let me know if you need any other measurements.

That’s really helpful Paul! My dimension is around 730mm so I am guessing new level sensor linkages are needed, as I have heard the ball joints can seize.

Mines 710mm.
I suspect it can be adjusted although i've not been underneath to have a look what adjustment is available on the F11.
It may be that the level sensors themselves can be adjusted positionally or the links can be connected in a number of places to shorten or lengthen them.

For the E61 you could buy adjustable links (for the levelling sensors) to either make fine adjustments or significantly lower the whole rear.

You should find the ride height in your supplementary owners handbook. I don't have an F11, but for my F31 it is in the Dimensions section under "construction height". [FWIW for the F31 B3s Touring the front is 639mm plus or minus 10mm, and the rear is 618mm plus or minus 10mm].

Here is the data from my D5 owners book.

It doesn't say where the measurements should be taken. So 649+/-10 front and 656+/- 10 rear.

Not sure if the +/- 10mm would account for an unladen car.

Interesting Frosty- my handbook says the same obviously!

It would be interesting to know where the dimension should be measured, we have three F11 D5 touring measurements giving an average of 713.3mm, yet the dimension given in the manual is 656mm (plus or minus 10mm), some 57mm difference.

Either the 656 is measured elsewhere, although i cant think where, or the manual is incorrect...

Hi Guys

I was looking at this in the manual earlier and wondering the same. I had thought it could be taken from the bottom edge / lip of the wheel, to the top of arch. Therefore not having to take into account possible variances in tyre height.

I’ll whip out a tape measure tomorrow…

mine looks to be high at the front. I will take it for a wheel alignment soon and get this addressed at the same time.

As suspected, this seems to be where the dimensions are taken. All seems to roughly tally, though I am parked on a sideways slope so not equal either side. I’ll check more thoroughly on a level piece of ground. Still looking a little high at the rear so some investigation needed.

How are you thinking of adjusting this Frosty? Does the shock body slide into the carrier and is retained by a clamp bolt?

Typically measurements that use the wheel arch as the upper reference will uses the lowest edge of the wheel for the lower reference - this negates incorrect tyre inflation. Measurements must be taken on a flat and horizontal surface.

With coil-over suspension, one can vary the ride height at each corner. With traditional springs a height adjustment at rear should be achieve able using different spring pads, but I don't think there is any option for the front.

Another good check is the left to right differnece.

Makes sense to negate the tyre type/wear, inflation etc.
I'd have thought the manual would have also noted the measurement is taken on 20" wheels In the same place as it carefully notes the dimensions are taken on a full tank of fuel, 2x68kg in the front seats, 68kg in the rear and 21kg in the boot!

Moot point on wheel size as I am sure they only ride 20's.

Wish I was weighing in at 68kg!

In contrast to BMW and Alpina, Porsche quote the ride height as being the distance from a flat/horizontal surface to specific bolts on the front and rear subframes (left to right should be the same). Granted its a bit of a faff to measure, but it negates different wheel/tyre sizes (as all should ultimately have the same overall diameter - Porsche have a lot of combos) and if a wing is poorly fitted post accident repair it doesn't affect ones ablity to measure the ride height.

I had a 911 where the subframe to floor heights were exactly per Porsche's spec, but the drivers, front, rim to arch height was 5mm greater than the passenger side. Strange. Took out the headlights (which takes about 30 seconds per side) and bingo one could see inside of the drives wing had only base paint, where as the passenger wing was factory paint. To be honest it was a very good replacement from the exterior and the car has no record of insurance work. I conculded it must have been a parking related accident, else the meaurements of the under side would have been out of spec.

Since that car I bought an electronic paint gauge!
