Almost like an Alpina ?

Post by TonyS » Sun May 23, 2021 11:40 pm

Interestingly, in his latest uTube video yesterday on the new Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0, Joe Achilles says ( at about 11m 49s ) that the ride can be "almost like an Alpina".
I nearly bought a Cayman, so I am now even more pleased I didn't and chose an Alpina instead. :D
I believe Joe has been a fan of Alpina for sometime, but recently he seems to forget how good Alpinas are on the road when he reviews other road cars.

bit of an odd comparison and i dont think his comments suggests they are rival cars but rather he was being flattering towards a certain aspect of the Alpina relative to the cayman

theres a room for both in my garage and they both perform their respective functions really well but they are not substitutes for each other by a long shot

He comes across as a likeable guy and I like the style of his reviews but the problem is that he is uncritical to a fault and basically says he likes everything he drives. If everything is good, nothing is. I guess there is the the need in the car YT world to maintain relationships with manufacturers, which means people are disinclined to risk biting the hand that feeds. Having said that IIRC he had a connection to Sytner Nottingham a few years back which led to him getting hold of several Alpina demo cars, but that relationship seemed to go south (all the way to Berry BMW) for whatever reason.

He does criticise some cars - the X3M Competition stands out as he hated the overly hard suspension on that. He has a great video from ages back of driving on the Autobahn with AB from Buchloe in a B7 I think I was and doing an interview at very high speeds - worth searching for it

Fair enough not seen the X3MC review, SUV’s aren’t my thing.

I have watched his interview with Andreas B and I agree it’s a good watch. Andy gave the big barge a pretty good thrashing at one point IIRC.

I could have sworn I saw him pull out of my local coffee shop over the weekend in a new M3, dark blue, maybe tan interior - first one I’ve seen - rather good actually (purposeful I’d say) and the front grills not too noticeable.

He is a bit of a fanboy most of the time and not overly critical from what i have seen but if that gets you a couple of hours with Andreas Bovensiepen in a B7 on the autobahn then who can blame him! That vid certainly is worth a watch.

There is a vid of him collecting the M3 recently (of course there is!), very nice colour combo he went for. Think he may have done a poll for colour options somewhere but then ignored the result and chose what he wanted anyway!

I've been watching his videos for some time, I don't think he's too critical of any of the cars that he gets cause he generally drives and reviews very nice cars.

I would also guess that he doesn't want to piss off any of his partners who let him review the cars as well.

I enjoy Joe’s video and my wardrobe has quite a lot of his merchandise ( which tbf is very good quality)

I believe I read somewhere there was an issue with insurance when dealing with Sytner which could not be resolved hence no recent Alpina content.
