B10 V8, No. 388
Re: B10 V8, No. 388
Air Con all sorted today, it was running empty with partial vacuum and took 1.2kgs of gas! my 'man' commented that most modern stuff would be full with around 400grams.... Miles at HPC where I bought the car stepped up with a very nice goodwill gesture to cover the cost of everything so happy days.
Steering wheel was good to use today, no black dye onto my hands and really nice to use. It now has a semi-satin/matt finish which is great. Cleared out the old garage....and it fits!

Mini meet up at Ashton Motors (ignore the garage in the background) today. There's another B10 (V8) hiding 'round the corner under a very proper layer of 'stoor' which is the Scottish equivalent of barn find dust......only a bit cheaper Much beardage was grown during couple hours of car talk/waffle.

Interesting to see your B10 V8 next to B10 3.2 #63, have you any connection with that one or is it just a coincidence?
Your V8 looks great by the way, love the colour and stripes.

Cheers Jim, I had a feeling Martin would be there with his so couldn't resist. Of course the he sold it 2 days later.....Anyway, the bright red strut brace just wasn't doing it for me so one rattle can of Oxford green and some cheapo bay stickers later....much less in yer face methinks
Went round all the seals with gummy phledge and cleaned the black inlet manifold up, battery has been on the c-tek for conditioning and some fresh pollen filters and gas struts for the boot ordered up. Booked in for a once over/service at Gordon's next week so will report back on that!

Saw the picture and immediately went to check whether the bottom part of my front spoiler hadn't been recommissioned into your engine bay!!!!

Chewed through £60 quids worth of Essos finest 99 to go and look at a Volvo in Edinburgh for family truckster duties. Couldn't bring myself to buy the Swede and had a nose around Aston Martin instead. The 1980's V8 Vantage won the imaginary lotto win competition.
My first M'way schlep in the B10 was very interesting. It replaces a tuned TVR Cerbera (4.5) which although quicker (more power and nearly half the weight) always made a noisy fuss at a cruise whereas the B10 really needs to be kept on a leash due to being so smooth and quiet and it is all too easy to find yourself making more progress than planned! The subtle burbles on the overrun are good in a not annoying anyone else way (the Cerb was polar opposite here too). Twisties on the way home, some good overtakes and fitted the new boot struts that had arrived when I got back so it now stays where you put it!
So far so good, let's hope this Alpina experience stays this positive....

Re: B10 V8, No. 388
Dropped off at the Indy's for a service/check over poke about on Saturday. So far we have done engine oil/filter, sump gasket, new front under tray as the old one was kaput, fresh discs and pads (Brembo) going on the front and might do the rears too as although they are ok we are replacing all the flex pipes with HEL braided ones. A new (correct) rad top hose is on it's way with some fresh coolant. Diff oil all good so leaving that (diff is nice and dry) and will get around to a gearbox oil change a little later as it was done not all that long ago. Also have a BMC air filter to go into the air box and the fuel filter, plugs and coils are all fairly recent. @ new pollen filters also on the way. Not sure the sump gasket was the cause of the wee pool of oil but now things are clean we can keep an eye on the other suspects
All the metal fuel lines and brake pipes appear to be original which is great but they have all been cleaned up and treated to help preserve them, so far so good!

Re: B10 V8, No. 388
Sounds like it's getting some proper tlc. I'd replace the 2 engine bay brake hoses from the ABS unit too while your're at it which I know HEL can supply as I provided them with the measurements, there have been a few cases where the old rubber hoses have split at an inopportune time which is possibly due to a combination of heat and age!

Thanks for the info Barry, will look into those hoses. Picked the car up yesterday and we did agent cruise to Perth and back to bed in the new brakes. We ended up doing the rears with all Brembo discs/pads too......even stationary at tickover it still wanted to creep forwards whilst pressing the pedal! They have now completed a few hundred miles and much better, nicely progressive and no vibration. Next on the list is to rub down and paint the callipers. They have been painted red at some point in the past and look awful. Will either go black or silver to keep things low key.
Cheers!
Cheers!
Re: B10 V8, No. 388
Well no miles this last week and neither have the callipers been painted It has been joined by it's annoying little brother in the shape of a 2014 m135i (5 door) which will conduct family duties/school runs whilst Mrs P scrapes all the wheels....... The upstart does however have to live outside whilst the B10 gets the garage
Changed the B10's insurance over to A plan (£220 fully comp/3K miles pa) which seemed ok-ish. Will shop around more next year as the Cerbera was <£180 through Footman James but I didn't have time to phaff around on the phone all day.
Cheers

Re: B10 V8, No. 388
Finally got around to painting the callipers. Chose graphite grey which is more battleship grey than thought but better than the manky flaking red . They now disappear nicely behind the spokes which is what I wanted as sliding callipers aren't exactly the prettiest of things to look at. Incidentally, the fronts are stamped with the motorsport "M" symbol? I assume perhaps from e34 M5 as I believe e39 M5 callipers to be quite bit bigger?

Re: B10 V8, No. 388
Alpina used the standard e39 540i calipers on the e39 B10. Never fitted M5 Brakes.

Re: B10 V8, No. 388
That was my understanding too, here is a better pic. Both front callipers clearly showing the 'M' logo in the cast. Unless 540 ones also have that marking? Before painting the brakes I spoke with the HiSpec brake crew regarding their 'Monster 4/6 ' pot conversions for the front but they felt only the 4 pots would have enough clearance under the 18" wheels. At over £1400 for the kit versus <£200 for new Brembo discs/pads it seemed an expensive way of doing things. There was also a 2 month lead time and the front pads were very low with the inner face of the discs not much better. Brakes are fine now although I couldn't help looking at Mrs P's 4 pot fronts and 2 pots rears on the 135i oik mobile and wondering.......
