B10 V8 - Rolling restoration

One benefit of lock down has been to spend some decent time working on my car.

In recent weeks I have fitted some replacement OEM parts like the centre cubby, and the drinks holders which had broken/past their best. I also tracked down a new side trim for my comfort seats which I need to fit but looks a trickier job!

However a couple of hours gave me a chance to bring the engine bay up to scratch. Am really pleased with the result. I just need to glue back in the 4.6 badge, and have a think about how to gently remove the rust from my Alpina chassis number (oddly the BMW one is just fine).

Rust on the Alpina chassis number is normal for a B10 of that era. The car would have had the chassis number stamped into it after it had been painted as far as I know and then Alpina would have touched in the paint afterwards.
Another problem area was rust around the boot spoiler retaining bolts and I believe someone was dismissed from Alpina for poor quality paint work when warranty claims started coming in.

This is beginning to look superb - great work. Silver stripes on the front spoiler will be really good. I'd be tempted to stripe the sides and rear too - my first Alpina was a B10 3.3 number 056 which was fully striped on Fern Grun paint. To Abanko - my car had Xenons but no angel eyes, with clear indicators, being pre facelift. It's still on the register from when I had it. I hope it's still being looked after by someone!

Yup, my car has the rust on those spoiler bolts, about to have the bootlid looked at, along with bumpers, once we are out of lock down.

I've also ordered the original roundels and grilles, which should arrive this week.

I think I prefer the low key look of just the silver stripes on the spoiler and the chrome of the grille. But might see how I feel once they are on.

Yup, my car has the rust on those spoiler bolts, about to have the bootlid looked at, along with bumpers, once we are out of lock down.

The rust doesn't look too bad in the photo. Could you get the bodyshop to do it when getting the other paintwork done? They should be able to clean it up and blow it in with an airbrush or similar.

I dealt with the spoiler bolts rust on my B10 when it was only 4 years old and the rust was relatively minor. BMW offered to fit a new boot lid under warranty but it would have involved not just painting the new boot lid but also the back wings to blend in the colour. Because of this I dealt with it myself as I wanted to retain the original paintwork.
I removed the spoiler and all of the rust on the top and underneath of the boot lid. The repair on the top was touched in within the footprint of the spoiler feet so does not show. I refitted the spoiler with new stainless steel bolts and washers and fitted a rubber washer between the stainless one and the repaired paintwork to stop the new paint from being damaged. I also put a ring of silicone sealant around the holes in the lid top before refitting the spoiler to prevent any water getting at the bolt holes. Finally I treated everything to a good coat of Waxoyl rust protector and over seventeen years later the repair is still rust free so I must have done something right.

Brand new mats arrived after a few weeks, from Buchloe.

Plan is to daily drive these, and have my rarer mats cleaned and restored, keep them for high days and holidays!

Storm Dennis meant that rain prevented fitment, but a good job for this week.

Indeed my rear spoiler bolts are rusting, another thing to add for paint. At this stage I'm close to a full respray

I expect so. I ordered these through Vines of Gatwick, who put the order out to Alpina.

Picked up my refurbished original mats today (I'd dropped them off before lockdown) and they look perfect!!!

Have a scroll back, and you can see that they were very heavily stained.

It was basically a very deep clean of the carpet, and the whipping on the edges.

Alas they cannot create magic and the big (heel) hole that we discovered under the (stuck on) rubber plate is still there, but they've tidied off the old glue, and stuck it back down. If you didn't know, you'd think it was supposed to look like this.

I don't think I am ever going to get a replacement for that drivers mat, so pleased with the way they are. I will use the modern B10 mats as dailies, and save these for any event.

Oh, and the price of this hard work....£20 cash placed under my windscreen wiper, got to maintain social distancing!

Little care package has arrived....

I went for pre-facelift grilles in the end.

Alas when I took the old ones off I spotted this little bump which has knocked the grille aperture out so the fit isn't as snug as I want it to be. So annoying, but hope someone can tweak it back without anything drastic like needing a new bonnet.

Wheel centres are for after refurbishment which I ought to get round to now that Lockdown has lifted.
