B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
With the arrival of the rear spoiler brake light, I decided to have the car serviced, whilst it was fitted at Munich Legends.
I've only done 4,000 miles this past year, but I always change the oil in my cars every year, and the car had far too little use before my ownership. Pleased to hear from Munich that the oil ran gold, but peace of mind always the greatest benefit.
I also had the front drop links replaced, as a perished protective boot had come up as an advisory on my MOT.
New external temperature sensor, and airbag control unit, to tick off the last few items on my B10 Glitch List!
Finally, with no impending requirement to drive this car, I asked them to send my wheels and centre caps to Lepsons for a full refurb. I'd previously ordered new badges and seals from Alpina GmbH.
They came back looking a treat. The placebo effect of these, and a freshly serviced car, it drove better than ever!!!

Having been completely detailed by Munich Legends, and sitting on fresh wheels, it was finally time to put the cherry on the cake!

Wow, where has two and a bit years gone? I think we all know the answer to that!
B10 BOV goes from strength to strength as an occasional daily driver. I have covered just under 9,000 miles in that period, and it's just had its third service in my custodianship. The first two with Munich Legends, and the latest with the wonderful team at BMR Performance.
Latest major work to the car was a full paint correction and ceramic coating. It was something I had uhmmed and ahhed about for some while, but seeing the results on another nineties car had me convinced.
The sheer brilliance of the Alpina Blau paint has returned, and combined with the fresh wheels and tyres, it just looks like a brand new car, once more. Whilst I wouldn't say the paint is flawless like a respray, the finish certainly is. Almost liquid in its depth of gloss.
Anyway a few photos here, and hopefully others to come!

B10BOV is looking very clean and fresh now Tom, ready for tomorrow's big shoot.
It might be a quirk of where you park for your photos but it often looks a bit high at the front to me.

I've just re-read this too as I'd missed the start of the journey. Great work - the car is looking superb. Glad you didn't sell!

I would be interested to know what the full paint correction involved as I would like to get something done with mine this year. The paintwork looks superb, Alpina Blue is amazing, might be slightly biased.

Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Thank you, I have an affliction in always trying to perfect my old cars, when I should probably just buy a garage queen in the first place!MartinBoulden wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 1:23 pmReally interesting reading your journey from buying this Alina and getting it to the condition its at today.
Awesome.
Jokes aside, I use this most days as my Station Car. I have always loved the E39 for the balance between a modern car, but also a car old enough that you can easily sort small jobs oneself, if required to.
Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Shoot went really well, we had perfect weather for it, and the partner car was a lovely example as well. Likely that the article will focus on Alpina and the brand, linking through to the respective cars.
I know what you mean. We have an odd rise in the tarmac at that point in the drive which I am sure is doing that. Look at the rear shot and they look a lot more level to each other. I had the full geometry set up done, when I first took the car for recommissioning with Munich, Legends. It certainly drives like it, it was formidable on the roads around Goodwood. I drove both cars and the B10 feels far quicker A to B, if not quite in a straight line, but the gap in that respect wasn't as large as I expected given the power deficit.
Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Thanks a lot, that's very kind of you.ScooBeeFive wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 9:33 pmI've just re-read this too as I'd missed the start of the journey. Great work - the car is looking superb. Glad you didn't sell!
Whilst it looks and drives better than ever, I am not attached enough to it, to not sell, and will advertise it initially to Club Members later this year.
I am keen to enjoy some more time in another AMG before we get taxed off the roads. I have several other classics to keep me happy tinkering.
Pricing on these is all over the place though, so I won't be going down the Collecting Cars etc route. The right buyer will now it's the right car for them, if that comes across right. I think they are very under appreciated, and widely misunderstood.
Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
So used a great company here in West Sussex called Parx Detailing.
The whole car was analysed, paint depths measured, and a plan put together. Then the non paint areas are masked up, before a very thorough smoothing of any classic BMW orange peel, before being completely Ceramic Coated. It took two full days of work, including a full engine detail as well.
I have always been very anti-professional-detailing, but this has completely changed my opinion on that.
Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Thanks that's really helpful. I wondered what they did about areas that might need paint like chips or any bubbles.

Go on you tube and watch a few videos of White Detailing.
