Post by amosfuegel » Tue May 13, 2025 4:14 am

Hi, Carwow is preparing to do a special feature and we are looking for the owner of a facelifted Alpina D3 S Touring to take part in a video shoot.

If you own this model and would like to share your passion with the car enthusiast community, please send me a direct message for more details. We are especially interested in cars that are original and in good condition.

- The shoot will be held at a convenient location in the UK and all travel and accommodation expenses will be fully covered. Please contact us and we will inform you of the exact time. Thanks.

I don't have one but if I did I couldn't ever see me wanting to do this, having spoken to a number of people who have over the years thought it was a good idea at the time I am yet to find one who said it was a great experience. What is the risk against reward, you give your vehicle to someone when you never really let anyone drive it and they treat it how they consider appropriate for the application.

Your reward, some expenses a lot of hanging around, unpaid time when you could be earning money or have take time off? What do you get some pictures or a video?

Is it worth it? Only the owner can decide, but the truth is most don't care about the owner they just want to achieve their own objective.

Not that I have a D3S but I'm just curious to know what happens if the vehicles suffer a mechanical failure whilst Matt Watson is ragging it?

This is definitely a thought-provoking request from Carwow. I imagine some owners won’t mind at all – in fact, they might love the idea of their car featuring in a high-production YouTube video. And to be fair, I do enjoy Matt Watson’s work and appreciate the effort that goes into creating engaging car content.

That said, I can’t help but feel that putting an Alpina D3 S Touring through the usual “rag it down the quarter mile” routine somewhat misses the point. Alpinas aren't just about straight-line speed or headline-grabbing launch times – they represent a different philosophy altogether. These are machines built for high-speed refinement, long-distance comfort and understated performance. They're at home eating up miles on derestricted autobahns, gliding past their BMW M counterparts with de restricted grace, not aggression.

Alpina is about craftsmanship, subtlety and real-world usability wrapped in discreet luxury – not necessarily about how fast you can get off the line on a drag strip. Of course, it’s always fun to compare performance figures, but that’s only one lens through which to view a car like this.

If anything, I'd love to see Carwow tell a different kind of story here – one that explores what makes an Alpina truly special and how that could be lost now that BMW has taken full control. There is /was engineering finesse with ALPINA with their hand-finished interiors - brute force power but encased in luxury ride & interior.

People who say "I don't get Alpina" have never lived with one.
Yes, they can be very quick and nimble but the primary job is to cosset. Cruisers not bruisers.
Good luck to Car wow, I to enjoy watching their work.
However comparing a B3 to the inevitable M3 and Audi RS out and out performance wise is missing the Alpina raison d'etre entirely.

Carwow videos are a bit of an occasional guilty pleasure and I always thought Matt’s reviews were well presented and researched. That said, I’ll be happy for my car not to be ragged from cold, not to have the transmission life reduced by 20-odd launch control starts and not to have it coming back smelling of Lynx Africa.

Having watched the last video where they spent the time ribbing the M340d, and commenting that they “never liked the [G21 B3] Alpina styling” I can’t imagine that there’ll be many D3S owners queuing up for this one.
