E46 instrument cluster

Post by Adwo » Wed Oct 24, 2018 12:38 am

Hi,

Looking for an E46 B3 instrument cluster, I have had 2 die on me already and the part is NLA at Alpina..

If somebody has one lying around or can point me in the right direction that would be very much appreciated!

Regards,

What have you been doing with them?

This is the first time I've heard of any such failure with an E46 instrument cluster, so your comment got me interested.

Nothing much..

From what I can deduce the Can-bus dies on the cluster leading to all kinds of problems.. No radio, no blinkers, no aircon, no central locking, etc.

The cluster does have power. The cluster from my E46 Alpina convertible works without fault..

I've sent it now to ecu.de in Germany, 2 other companies said they couldn't repair it..

Lots of total failures with E46 cllusters in general though..

A quick search on Google reveals some E46 cluster failures but it appears that they are restricted to early year cars - so I stand corrected that this is a thing.

I also came across this which might be helpful :D

Yeah, I searched high and low for a solution, but nothing to be found on how to troubleshoot the cluster itself.

Came across the bad ground posting also, but as my other Alpina cluster is working in the car that seems not to be the problem.

Mine's a 99 with the Motometer cluster, indeed an earlier car..

Will keep you posted..

Hi,

Thanks for the offer, they managed to revive one though, so not needed anymore.

Cheers,

Is there any difference in an Alpina cluster and a standard e46 one of same area. Can you not just change the face with Alpina badge to the other working cluster. Or is that way to simple.

Never saw this earlier..

I have to admit that I still need to investigate where the differences are. I assume that you can set up a regular cluster by changing the values for certain parameters..

In the NCS Expert files for kombi on an E39 it literally says 'Alpina cluster Y/N'. Haven't found anything for the E46 that resembles that. I have to go over a full TRC file from E46 Kombi with NCS Expert, but haven't found the time yet.

Anyone else who wants to investigate?
