G21 B3 Touring - which wheels?

Post by Roma101 » Sun Nov 19, 2023 8:35 pm

Hi

I’m new to the forum. I’ve just placed an order for a G21 B3 and I am trying to decide between the 19” wheels and the classic 20”. I initially stuck with the 19s as I quite like the design and in theory they should offer a better ride.

However, I am now having second thoughts. I read that the 20s are actually lighter than the 19s as the 20s are forged, not cast (I think it was a PH review of the car that said this). Also, all the reviews are based on cars with 20s, so you know what you are getting with the 20s.

On the flip side, the 20s are an extra 2k.

Has anyone driven a car with 19s? Would there be any material difference between the two wheels dynamically?

Thanks in advance.

It has to be the 20’s every time as it just finishes off the car, if your like me you’ll get the 19’s and always wonder ‘what if’

Thanks for your views. However, what do you mean when you say you wonder ‘what if’? What if the car handled better with 20”s? What if it looked better with 20”s? Or something else?

That’s the direction I am heading in at the moment. Is your view based on aesthetics or because you have driven a car on 19”s?

I have the 20" Classics and personally much prefer the looks of these. Being a bit shallow I'd probably still go for them even if there was a noticeable difference in ride comfort, which I am not aware there is. Don't think you can go wrong either way as they are wonderful cars.

Stunning example you have there! I think I am now leaning towards the 20”s. Just trying to get a test drive in Alpina’s demo though.

Classics here too. I wouldn’t worry too much about the weight saving of a few kg given the car is more than two tonnes fully loaded. Being forged might well help them to withstand buckling, but then again because they necessitate thin bands of liquorice for tyres, that may be offset by the increased likelihood of taking impacts in the first place. I had three separate incidents of damage/puncture necessitating replacement in the space of a few months. It may have been bad luck but the wheel/tyre combo probably didn’t help.

That being said I wouldn’t swap them. The Dynamics are a handsome wheelset in their own right but the Classics are, well, classic and iconic. Plus I like how they fill the arches.
