E92 D3 Biturbo hybrid turbo's

Post by BR05FUN » Mon Nov 28, 2022 7:12 pm

Hi all,

Small turbo died and big turbo had bent blades. Have gone for hybrid turbo's, decat and Wagner intercooler. Any recommendations on charge pipes and cold air intake upgrades?

Cold air is pretty restricted for the E90s over the front radiator without resorting to having a feed from one of the fog light grills, as per the E46 CSL.

Most I’ve seen just have the box swapped for a large cone and the OEM intake pipe close to it. Still got the heat from the engine though which is difficult to shield on these. Perhaps an M3 style bonnet could help and use one of the cold air grills to supplement as the M3 does, taking it from 2 different places.

Those are large turbos, I wish there were similar engineering companies round here who could tackle these jobs through, including a re-map, but they are pretty much nonexistent. Even finding and independent garage to refurbish the standard turbos is difficult.

Looks like great work in progress, I’d love to see the results on the D3

Excuse my ignorance but what's a "hybrid" turbo?

Best Turbos in Oldbury.
They only do manufacturers refurbishment on a exchange basis.
Going Hybrid then your turbo's are used.
Hybrid turbo's basically increase intake diameter and have a larger propeller. More torque and BHP. Needs custom remap for full potential to be released.

To quote Turbo Technics website:
The term ‘hybrid’ simply refers to the fact that a ‘hybrid turbo’ consists of a mixture of parts from different turbochargers, usually based on an original unit for a specific application. Originally, this was simply a case of mixing and matching components between different configurations of the same type of turbo, to achieve a desired performance characteristic.
Over the years, the number of turbo models (and manufacturers) has increased, and with it the number of different components on offer. These days it is possible to build hybrid performance turbos vastly different to their original spec with dramatic changes in performance.

How does it drive now then, what sort of power is it producing. With all this should see something.

Car seems faster. But as decat and egr blanked engine lights on so runs a bit rubbish. Intercooler gets fitted Monday. Road mapping over a few days. Once complete will get Dyno results. Having issues finding Boost/Charge pipes. Samco and Forge don't do any. Found some from a company called Masata. Never heard of them so not keen on purchasing.

If you’re in the Midlands I would recommend Simon at E-maps in Brownhills, he’s mapped a few of mine in the past. Used to work for Porsche.

Update

Went in blind to this project
Auto box, so Alpina map torque already maxed at 450nm for torque converter
Was offered engine map and gearbox map but would of been £1000+
Decided I'll cut my loses and just map out dpf and egr delete.
Returning the Wagner intercooler.
Tried on the rolling road but gearbox wouldn't hold 5th gear in manual so no figures obtained.
Only wasted £700 on hybrid upgrade and mapping
Lesson learnt. Don't get excited and rush forward without research.
When car decides to die I'll get a manual D3 BT and switch the Hybrids over.
On a positive note. Car wheels spin more, nicer exhaust note and very tiny bit of smoke out the back. Raced a Audi's 3.0tdi and e92 330d and was keeping up. Maybe crap drivers or cars a bit faster.
