Headlamp lhd to rhd conversion question

Post by Revolvo » Sun Aug 21, 2022 11:23 am

I’ve searched the various fora and couldn’t find an answer to this question so now I’ll put it to ye and all help appreciated.

I will take my lhd E92 LCI from Germany to Ireland within the next two weeks. The car is fitted with the adaptive units and I really appreciate what they do. I will register it in Ireland and to secure a registration, the car must pass the national car test (NCT) equivalent to the MOT test in The UK. The only issue I see that could cause a test failure is the headlamp aim.

Now the question is, can the headlamp units be adjusted or opened and a switch flicked within to convert them from EU to IRL/UK driving or must I replace the whole units for RHD units OR as someone suggested to me, just change the control units (which seems a bit odd given that I understand that the units are sold for either lhd or rhd cars).

If I change the headlamps, do I need to buy new control units or is it just a case of some reprogramming ?

Best to change out the units completely and if so, what brand is OEM or nest recommended by most users here?

If already all covered in here somewhere, happy to be pointed there and looking forward to hearing back from ye.

I thought many modern cars had the option to switch beam direction to allow for driving in other countries. Have you checked owners handbooks to see if it’s mentioned there?

Not entirely sure for the LCI but for mine (e92 2008) there is a lever inside the top cover. The instructions are in the BMW owners manual

Bob, JihnW

Thanks a million for these pointers which might be the magical tips I need. I couldn’t find anything in my owner’s manual even in hard copy or online but I’ll give this a go and hope that this switch is within the adaptive units as well.

I’ll let you know how I get on with them and take some photos of it while I’m at it.

Thanks
