Newbie Seeking Advice On Potential 2014 B7 Purchase

Post by YamahaRick » Sun Jul 17, 2022 10:34 pm

I'm in The US, and am considering the purchase of a 2014 SWB 2WD B7. About 55K km.

I plan to have a pre-purchase inspection completed by an independent BMW specialist. What issues should I be looking for?

The M2 engine is based on the N63TU, which had its issues. Are there any suggestions on what I can do to enhance reliability? Examples - upgrading coolant lines, ceramic coat headers and turbos, etc.

Lastly, what cat-delete full exhaust systems are still available for this car? I will consider custom pipes to an aftermarket muffler, but am not familiar with what would be an optimum design or diameter to use. I do plan to have a bypass valve.

Anyone with a similar car with a modest and reliable tune? My goal is to top 200MPH under controlled conditions, just to say I've done it. Will the stock suspension handle it for a short burst?

I know about the expensive tires and brakes. I will follow an aggressive Preventative Maintenance Plan - coils, plugs, lots of oil changes, etc. What else should I add to this list?

Any suggestions/comments welcome. I am still trying to learn. TIA.

Rick

Hi Rick - unfortunately, most of the active membership here are UK based and we only got 10 examples of the E65 B7 on these shores. That is probably why you aren't getting many replies.

From threads I have read, try checking out Sreten's YT channel, he has documented his experiences rebuilding a B7 and has highlighted a number of potential issues. There are other specialists like the crazy diy engineer who services and rebuilds the supercharger. And there are a number of Facebook groups with US B7 owners who may be good sources of advice and information. FYI there has apparently been a degree of animosity between Sreten and some other ALPINA B7 owners and as soon as you mention tuning ALPINA cars many will consider that sacriligious ... so you've been warned.

Thanks Bob. Sadly, I don't do Facebook. And I've viewed a few of the YT vids already.

I understand the folks that are "offended" by modding a car like this. Why mess up something that is essentially perfect? Well, in my case I just need a bit more power to get to 200MPH. Also, every design has a safety factor built in; I just want to decrease that only a little bit. Nothing drastic.

And, as with everything, the car may have issues I need to be aware of. I am taking a risk in buying an eight year old vehicle, especially one that has high potential of being abused in its earlier life.

ALPINA are well known for being conservative on their performance stats. There were a couple of instances where the B7's were clocked at over the claimed 300km/h top speed, one was at an apparent 325km/h So you may find that a healthy and fully functioning example is still capable of 200mph given the right track
