Urgent recall letter received

Post by Rav » Fri Jan 28, 2022 5:34 pm

An urgent recall letter from BMW group UK just landed on my door mat.
It informs me that the drivers airbag in my car needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
The letter features my vehicle registration number and Alpina chassis number. I called up my local BMW centre, who said that they would look into it. The alpina chassis number comes up as a BMW X1 in Macau and that caused quite a stir. The old BMW chassis number comes up as nothing.

I had the air bag replaced last year at the same centre. I just wonder if they didnt document it or is this another recall following the replacement of the last air bag?

I have been asked to send them a scan of the letter so they can look into it, but dont understand why it was sent.

How bizarre

We had an E46 through recently which came up on the MOT History as needing a recall and we the letter from BMW in with all the handbooks etc. but the BMW dealer insisted that it said on their system it had been done. We pressed them on it and they did call back to say there were in fact two recalls and one had been done and one had not. Now all sorted.

There have been two airbag recalls for the E46, I believe - one for the steering wheel bag and the other for the two bags either side of the front screen.

I’ve had the same letter, going to see them tomorrow. As a point of interest my chassis number always comes up as an X1. Lloyds in Cockermouth never seemed to have a problem getting or finding stuff so it will be interesting to see what the local Bournemouth dealer has to say.

Better check my post in the next few days then!

Mind you, a quick check via the MOT check DVLA site reveals that there are no recalls listed against my car.

Henry, has yours had the steering wheel airbag replaced?

Rav, you may be right that they didn't log the replacement properly on the system

I’m booked in for the 24th. The guy who booked me in said he thought it was for a side air bag. I’ll let you know what they change when done.

Well 24th has come and gone, to be fair they did say they sent me a text, just sent it to the wrong number. Apparently the bag is on back order. They will let me know when it arrives.
