B10 V8 suspension arms / old tyres
Hi,
Are there alternative suppliers to BMW for suspension arms? All 4 need to be replaced @ £1,300 incl. VAT (BMW cost).
Also, if a car has been stored or not regularly used for some time what is the safe maximum lifespan for tyres? They have all got good tread etc but does the rubber perish and cause safety issues after a few years?
Thanks

Re: B10 V8 suspension arms / old tyres
I had a brand new spare tyre in my boot when I bought my car but it was 10 years old at the time so I asked Michelin on their thoughts and this was part of their reply:
The British Tyre Manufacturer's Association and our recommendations are as follows:-
Tyres are composed of various types of material and rubber compounds, having performance properties essential to the proper functioning of the tyre itself. These component properties evolve over time. For each tyre, this evolution depends upon many elements such as weather, storage conditions, and conditions of use (load, speed, inflation pressure, maintenance, etc.) to which the tyre is subjected throughout its life. This service-related evolution varies widely so that accurately predicting the serviceable life of any specific tyre in advance is not possible. While most tyres will need replacement before they achieve 10 years, it is recommended that any tyres in service 10 years or more from the date of manufacture, including spare tyres, be replaced with new tyres as a simple precaution even if such tyres appear serviceable and even if they have not reached the legal wear limit.
cheers
Barry

Re: B10 V8 suspension arms / old tyres
When was the last time any of us checked the spare (assuming there is one) apart from giving it a knock occasionally to check it was still holding air
Thanks for this as it didn't even cross my mind - looks like my 18yo spacesaver tyre will be being replaced very soon.

they were half the price of BMW when I did my F11 recently, but my mechanic ended up getting Lemforder parts direct from Autodoc in Germany that were cheaper still.

I use lemforder for the E30 as I believe that they were the BMW supplier.

Re: B10 V8 suspension arms / old tyres
I had a set of 12 year old 17” Pirelli winter run flat tyres and noticed just last month the rubber was cracking along the circumference of the tread pattern, thin hairline cracks but all the way round. They still had around 5mm on them but better safe than sorry.
Going for a set of Front 235 45 17 and Rear 245 45 17 Goodyear Ultra grip plus, they have had some decent reviews lately, I think the grip will improve drastically too given the way the rubber dries out on winters.
